Bali International Rapid, Benidorm, Spain
27th to 29th November, 2003

Topalov Champion, Anand & Radjabov share the second spot

Grandmaster Veselin TopalovBulgarian Super Grandmaster Vesselin Topalov took the Bali rapid title ahead of favorite Vishy Anand with a 7/10 score. Topalov defeated Polgar, Mamedyarov, Karjakin and Hillarp Persson and drew the rest to clinch the title.

Anand, who is in fine nick, won three games and remained undefeated at the second place with 6.5 points. Baku boy, Radjabov shared the second spot with Anand logging 6.5 points.

Defending Champion Judit Polgar, had an awful tournament and finished with 4.0 points, with just lower ranked Spaniard Alfonso Romero Holmes, 2.5 points, behind her.

The tournament lost a bit of its luster, as former World Champion Anantoly Karpov, withdrew after his request to delay his first round game, wasn't heeded to. Karpov flew in directly from Brazil, when a flight delay soured his tournament plans.
