Parimarjan
started at the age of just five and was soon the talk of the town as
many masters believed that he had the potential to make it big and
perhaps one day he would become the first Grandmaster from the city.
Slowly but steadily the young guy is walking up on the success ladder
and his big achievement came recently when he won the National
Sub-Junior Chess Championship held at Calicut, Kerala.
Just 11-years old, Parimarjan is the youngest ever to become the Sub-Junior
Champion and he eclipsed the record of Grandmaster P
Harikrishna enroute to a fine victory in Calicut.
Earlier this year, Parimarjan was nominated for the 'Young Achievers
Award' from Hero India Sports Academy (HISA). The award eventually
went to cricket star Irfan Pathan, but we are sure that there are many
more in the offing for Parimarjan.
For the record, Parimarjan has won as many as three National titles so
far viz, Under-9 in 2002, Under-11 in 2003 and now this under-15 in
2004. Also the young chess genius has to his credit a Gold medal won
in Under-10 Asian Championship at Tehran in Iran in 2002 April.
Apart
from this Parimarjan won the Gold medal in the under-10 section of
Commonwealth Chess Championships held in Mumbai in 2003 and earlier
this year he achieved the silver medal in under-14 section of the same
event again at Mumbai. Also he won a silver medal in the National
Under – 7 chess championship in 2000.
Add to all this his another record breaking performance at Bad Weissee
International Chess tournament at Germany where he made his maiden
International Master Norm, which in turn made him the youngest ever
Indian to do so, and it is very easy to see a sound foundation for a
glittering chess career on the chequered board.
Even off the board, Parimarjan’s exploits are there for all too see.
A student of class VI of Amity International School, Saket, Parimarjan
is amongst the best students in his class. The school is supporting
Parimarjan in a big way with an annual scholarship of Rs. 200000/-
(Rupees Two Lakhs) to fulfill his ambitions in chess. This money is
mainly spent on Parimarjan’s training and participation in some
important events.
Last year Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) helped Parimarjan’s
participation in the Bad
Weissee International Open, Germany tournament by giving him
full sponsorship. This year too, the oil major has granted a
sponsorship for Parimarjan’s participation in foreign tournaments to
the tune of R 400000/-(Rupees Four Lakhs).
Also, Parimarjan is on a scholarship with Indian Airlines Ltd. And
they take care of his travel with their airlines in all his
participation in National/International events.
Parimarjan is mainly trained by Grandmaster Evgeny Vladimirov of
Kazakhastan who is also the trainer of Indian team for many years and
G.B.Joshi of Delhi. Also there are a host of other Indian players who
have been training him from time to time.
Parimarjan’s main ambition right now is to become the youngest ever
Grandmaster of the World for which he has about 15 months left. In the
opinion of many experts, this is not a difficult task for the
soft-spoken boy. In short, the best is yet to be!
