In these openings, black accepts a mildly cramped position to be able to dictate the course of action by withholding his e-pawn from e5 as a target for white's pieces.

Until the early 20th Century, the opening of choice in international play was 1 e4. By the time Alekhine met Capablanca in the 1927 World Championship match, it was no surprise to anyone that 32 of 34 games began 1 d4 d5 2 c4.

Until the 'Hypermodern Revolution' in the '20s and '30s, any answer to 1 d4 except 1...d5 was considered an aberration. Now 1...Nf6 is a standard answer to 1 d4, combined with moves such as ...g6, ...b6, and ...Bg7 or ...Bb7.

As you advance in experience, your repertoire should expand naturally to include less and less direct, and more and more subtle options. The general idea is that the less direct your threats, the more likely your opponent will go wrong.
