Army officers who were in Pacific Northwest before the Civil War:  The Army officers listed below are mentioned in 1898 article about Seattle Chess as “included chess-playing  among their accomplishments but no record of the fact (that they played in Pacific NW) has come down to us.”   Search of Internet turns of the following...

  • Ulysses (Hiram) S. Grant (1822-1885) West Point Class 1843  He was at Fort Vancouver, WA 1852-1853

  • Melancthon T. Burke (1831-1919) says he played chess with Ulysses S. Grant in Galena, IL. per a website about Grant. There is a picture of Grant playing chess with Mrs W.B. Dinsmore on a chess website.

  • George Edward Pickett (1825-1875)  at Bellingham Bay and San Juan Islands (1859 Pig War) about 1860-1861. He attended West Point same time as McClellan class of 1846, Pickett was last in the class of 59 members.

  • August Vanlentine Kautz (1828- 1896) In Oregon Territory in 1856. West Point Class of 1852. In Pacific NW 1852-1861. Died in Seattle, WA

  • Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) West Point Class 1853 Pacific NW  abt1855

  • George Brinton McClellan (1826-1885) West Point Class 1846 In Pacific NW 1853&1854 (at foot of Lake Chelan Sept 25, 1853)

  • Chess set and box owned by McClellan during Civil War.
