Chessville's Online Chess League
FAQ
by Carl Tillotson
Welcome to the Online Chess League F.A.Q section. With a bit of luck,
all the help and assistance you will ever need (for OCL of course!) will be
here. If you are still stuck, then send an e-mail to OCL
Help with a question and I will try and get an answer back to you, or post
an entry on the F.A.Q.
Well hopefully you already have an FICS or ICC account; if not then then best
thing to do is to visit one of these sites and get started. After all,
theses sites have better information and we would only be repeating it:
FICS: http://www.freechess.org
ICC: http://www.chessclub.com
Interfaces for FICS
Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP
MacOS
I cannot vouch for the MacOS stuff as I have one of those horrible PC
thingies :-)
Who said I couldn't be diplomatic!
Interfaces for ICC
ICC has it's own interface, and well to be honest, you shouldn't really use
anything else. If you want you can use the other interfaces available for FICS
but you will have to configure yourself.

Things your mother didn't tell you, and you were too afraid to ask........
How do I issue a challenge? |
Take a bit more time to RTM, or
quick starter for OCL'ers would be to 'match opponent 60 15' if
you wanted to play White, or 'match opponent 60 15 black'
if you were playing black. There are other elements to this basic
command, try HELP MATCH from the console when logged on to either FICS or
ICC.
|
How do I play chess? |
Don't ask me, I am still learning
myself! Get back to me when you have got an answer!
|
I don't seem to get my moves
e-mailed back to me?
I don't get my moves e-mailed back in PGN format. |
Check your variables. The
default variables are not set-up in the format that OCL accept.
The main command to use is SET, which allows you to SET a
variable. For more help type HELP VAR or HELP SET.
To get e-mail sent to you, you need to set
automail 1, this will e-mail the moves back to you.
Strangely enough, the default settings is not for PGN. To ensure your
moves are e-mailed to you. And as it happens the two servers have
different variable, thankfully they both need to be set to 1.
FICS - set pgn 1
ICC - set mailformat 1
|
Hrmm, I've lost my e-mail after
I finished the game! |
Well don't delete it too quickly
then :-)
However, should you lose the moves of a game, then help is on hand - so
long as you don't wait too long! It all depends on the stored limit on the
server. For more details do HELP MAILSTORED, but for now:
"mailstored darooha 8" -- This mails
game #8 in darooha's history.
"mailstored darooha POTZY" -- mails
the adjourned game.
"mailstored 5" -- mails game 5 in
your current search list.
"mailstored %5" -- mails game 5 in
your personal library.
Remember when I said use Blitzin for ICC? Well if you have done
then experiment with the interface.
For example, in the console type HIS and a pop-up window comes up with
the history of your games. Highlight the game you are interested in and
RIGHT-CLICK to get to a submenu of useful command including 'mailstored'

I know how to make a business succeed, I
know how to work harmoniously with others and I've made enough money to give
chess the amount of time it deserves.
