Besides Chinook, which you can play at web.cs.ualberta.ca:80/~chinook, which is the best checkers program? There are four of them, which seem to be very good (both in features and stronger skills with an endgame database):
PC Solutions gives away a demo version of Sage 6000. Or get the free DOS program Blitz Draughts 5.4 from them.
I'm sorry. But, I cannot break the four-way tie for you. They all seem fairly strong. But, I have not seen any test of their speeds or abilities. Colossus seems to have the largest opening book. All are fairly friendly, with a few features that drive me up a wall (irritate me).
