2000 Inter-District (I-D) Tournament

Tom Sheehan won the 2000 Inter-District (I-D) Checkers-By-Mail Tournament (the national championship of checkers-by-mail). I took 4th place, which is a good score; but I played very poorly and carelessly. This tournament was unpleasant for me, for several reasons. And I don't plan to play by mail for a few years. In this tournament, each player played 8 games (up from 6 games in previous years), simultaneously, against each of the other competitors. Here are the final standings:

  1. Tom Sheehan, Bronx, NY
  2. Bert Vanderpool, Athens, PA
  3. Sherman Gardner, Cincinnati, OH
  4. Jim Loy, Bozeman, MT
  5. Lester Balderson, Richmond, VA
  6. Kenneth Wold, Revillo, SD

If you need it to read the following, please print out the numbered board.

Loy-Sheehan, 2000 I-D
12-16 24-20 10-15 (The Skunk, one of the tough mail play openings) 22-18 15-22 25-18 11-15 (8-12 29-25 16-19 is Nigel Proffitt's easier draw) 18-11 8-15 20-11 7-16 23-19 16-23 27-11 3-8 11-7 2-11 21-17 11-16 (suggested by Ronnie Winton, as the only draw) 29-25 (26-23 draws PP) 8-12 28-24 (25-22 draws PP) 16-20 31-27 (25-22 draws PP) 4-8 25-22 6-10 17-13 9-14 13-9 14-17 22-13 5-14 13-9 10-15 26-23 8-11 23-19 15-18 19-15 11-16 15-10 18-23 27-18 14-23 24-19 20-24 9-6 24-27 6-2 27-31 19-15 31-27 10-7 27-24 7-3 24-20 15-11 WW?

I resigned there. But the position is a draw. Continue: 16-19 3-8 19-24 11-7 24-27 7-3 27-31 3-7 31-27 7-10 27-24 8-11 12-16 10-14 24-19 2-7 23-26 30-23 19-26 14-18 26-31 11-15 31-26 draw, as I showed in the I-D booklet.
