From diagram #1, the following pitch (sacrifice) is hard to find. Red regains the piece, and has a won ending. This last move (11-16*) works wonders. Look at the position yourself, to see how badly off White really is. From diagram #2: 23-18 (2-7 16-11 RW) 20-24 RW. So, again at diagram #2, the pathetic 28-24 followed by 23-18 is White's best continuation. So he resigned instead.
