(13 November 2002): I have started a new project to bring all the crosstables up to date for the 14th USCCC Preliminaries and the 15th USCCC Preliminaries. I have been appointed as Tournament Director for both of these events, with the exception of sections US14P01 and US15P05, which will remain under International Arbiter Allen Wright. I ask all participants with results not recorded in the crosstables to contact me with game reports, including complete game scores for finished games. Also, I'd like to collect ALL games in these two events for an on-line archive (PGN format would be most appreciated). Send your information to: Contact Webmaster. Thanks for your help. Please, this is a difficult project. Even if you have a loss please report it to me to help me out. -- Franklin Campbell
(26 October 2002): Steve Ryan has observed the need for more cooperation among the various correspondence chess organizations of the world and, in his usual fashion, has attempted to improve things. Read his An Open Letter to the Correspondence Chess Players of the World and, if you agree substantially with his letter, add your signature. I've already added my own. My salute to Steve for taking action and trying to improve our wonderful world of cc!
(27 July 2002): The much anticipated Chess Club Potaissa Turda web site has been launched
and has attracted a lot of attention. Congratulations to this team playing in Section 8 of the ICCF Champions League team tournament. Most have agreed that they did an excellent job designing their logo and web site. Don't overlook the special MADVS DOGVS page honoring yours truly (thanks for the MADVS DOGVS medal of honour, guys!). My congratulations to the entire team for exceeding our expectations and for demonstrating great team spirit and enthusiast for this spectacular team event, created by ICCF Email Office Commissioner Chris Lüers.

(23 July 2002): News from the ICCF Champions League ...Chess Club Potaissa Turda has been promising a new web site for their team to be announced on Friday, July 26. They have also promised a team logo, boasting it will outclass the current best team logo of Team CC.COM. We're all anxiously awaiting this stupendous announcement wondering what the pages will look like. They've already promised that the Mad Dog will be incorporated into the site in some form. All the speculation led to the creation of the parody (joke) site Chess Club Potato Turda. Check it out and then watch for the real site announcement. It will be intriguing to compare the new site to the parody site.
The Colorful Webmaster for The Wicked Bishops
Team Webmaster
Jason Bokar
(10 July 2002): News from the ICCF Champions League ... Jason Bokar, board 4 and Webmaster for the highly-ranked team The Wicked Bishops, has announced that their web site will be carrying all their games "live" with a 2-3 move delay. To find the games in java-replay format go to their web site at: The Wicked Bishops. Each player has his own page. Go to the player page and look for the link to the "live" games under the team member portrait. At the moment Board 2 John Mousessian (check out the BIG fish) and Board 4 Jason Bokar have their games available. The other two players will have their games posted soon. Way to go, wicked ones! This is really cool!

Grandmaster_elect
Ian_Brooks
(16 June 2002): Congratulations to Dr. Ian Brooks (ENG) who has recently achieved his final GM norm and will officially receive his title at the upcoming ICCF Congress in Portugal! His GM norms came in the following two tournaments: Reg Gillman memorial, section B: 14 games, 5 GMs, 4 SIMs and Olympiad 14 Preliminaries, section 3 board 1: 11 games, 1 GM, 4 SIMs. Ian is a resident of the USA and is playing in the 1st US CC Championship Final. He will also be playing for England (vs. the USA team!) in the Final of the 14th CC Olympiad. GM-elect Brooks not only plays chess at the highest level but also serves the cc community as TD in the ICCF - First Email World Championship Semi-Final and as ICCF Rules Commissioner. He also wrote a very popular column for APCT News Bulletin.
(6 July 2002): What do you think about the 60 days for 10 moves ICCF E-mail time limit? Many complain about opponents slowing down play when they get a bad position. Players moving quickly at the beginning of the game can accumulate hundreds of days for later use. Read Why I Dislike ICCF's Current 60/10 E-mail Time Rules by "The Modern Correspondence Chess Player" for a simple yet effective suggestion for solving this problem.
(5 July 2002): "The Campbell Report" for May-June 2002 has now been posted. This column has been running in the APCT News Bulletin for well over a decade. The last 9-1/2 years are archived on the Campbell Report Columns and Articles page. You can find this latest column at May-June 2002.

SIM John Timm (USA)
John Timm
(9 May 2002): USA competitor Senior International Master John Timm has won the right to participate in the World Championship Final with an excellent result in his 3/4-final World Championship section and scored a GM norm along the way. There is a profile of John Timm and one of his wins from the 3/4-final (fully annotated by Timm and available in javascript replay ... even the annotations can be played over on the on-screen board). Check out the announcement, player profile and annotated game on the ICCF-U.S. web site.

(10 April 2002): Interview
The "live" Fischer Random match between Steve Ryan (CAN) and IM Valer-Eugen Demian (CAN) has ended and the players have graciously agreed to a post-match interview. Read their impressions and opinions about this match and about Fischer Random chess in general.

Read the Fischer Random Match Interview.

(3 April 2002): Two new USA national championship tournaments (USCCC's) have just been announced by the ICCF-U.S. office for U. S. citizens and permanent residents. Pick the Postal Championship (entries close July 15, 2002), the Email Championship (entries close December 15, 2002), or play in both! Read the USCCC Tournaments Announcement (in a new browser window) for full information.

(18 November 2001): Want to surf some new chess web sites of interest? Check out Sites of Note. I try to add a new listing several times a week. If you have an interesting site to recommend to your chess friends, send your recommendation to Contact Webmaster . Another good source of sites to check out is Chess Watch at the Kasparov site.

(26-Sept-2001): ICCF Jubilee Congress Web Site now available. Follow the ICCF Congress (22-28 September 2001) in Rimini, Italy via Pedro Hegoburu's reports. His pre-congress report and first two regular reports are now posted. Also available are reports and pictures from the previous two congresses. Just added ... photos from the Congress!
The chess short story Fruit of the Poisonous Tree is still available, as are many other articles posted during the last 3+ years. For a complete list see On the Square Articles.
