2005 Club Championship -
    Dec 3-4 GMU/Arlington

IM Larry Kaufman continued the family tradition by winning the 2005 Arlington Chess Club championship. Every year since 2000 a Kaufman has been champ so it could be said that you have to go back to a different millennium to find an ACC champ not named Kaufman. Only in 2004 did Ray Kaufman break his father's run on club championships.

Twenty nine of the 59 entries were club members and competing for the club titles. Steve Linett won the 2005 Amateur title with a 2.5 score, having beaten and drawn two experts.

The tournament was held at George Mason University/Arlington campus, the scene of all but one of the club championships since they resumed in 1998. Eventually this building is going to be torn down and replaced by a new building GMU's construction plans for the university. It has done well as a club venue for tournaments. This tournament would have been better as a five round event or as a tournament split into two sections, but the 4-round slower time control was voted the choice by players a couple years ago. The split tournament, for some reason that defies logic, doesn't attract more players and often attracts less players.

Halfway through the event, a dozen players were perfect at 2-0 and then five after three rounds maintained perfection. The final round saw Alex Wojtkeiwicz playing Alex Barnett on board one, the family match of Larry vs Ray Kaufman on board 2 and John Meyer (3) versus IM Oladapo Adu (2.5 from a third round bye) on board three. Adu defeated Meyer and Larry won, leaving the final result up to the Battle of the Alex's - the last game to finish. Barnett had less than a minute left to Wojo's 15 minutes but was up a pawn in a RB+2P versus RN+1P ending when a draw was agreed.

Larry was in clear first with 4, with Wojo, Adu, and Barnett at 3.5, along with Shinsaku Uesugi at 3.5. Only a few experts came and the only two who finished their schedule, Daniel Clancy and Kyle Kowalske, took the Expert prize. Uesugi took the "A" money into the place pool. Steve Linett and Sanda Costescu toko the B, Darryl West and David Paden the C, William Frame the D and Jimmy Wang the U1200.
