Sivakasi: Top seed Deepan Chakravarthy and former world U-12 champion Deep Sengupta shot into joint lead after posting wins with the black pieces in the fifth round of the National Junior Championship on Nov 30 morning. Like in the boys, top seed Koneru Chandrahawsa and National U-17 champion P.Uthra scored with the black pieces to stay on top with 4.5/5 in the girls section. Harikrishna Has It Easy

Pentyala Harikrishna won the 9th Essent Grandmaster Tournament at Hoogeveen in the Netherlands on Oct 29. Harikrishna scored a victory against Stefanova with the black pieces and one over Ivan Sokolov with the white pieces. He coasted to an easy title with draws in the remaining games for his 4/6. Sokolov finished second with 3.5, Sutovsky third with 2.5 and Stefanova last with two points. The tournament started with a unique feature of inviting four players - best Dutch player, World Junior Champion, World Women's Champion and one veteran. This time Sutovsky was the veteran! Mamedyarov Regains World Junior Title At Istanbul In the boys section, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Az) regained his title he won in 2003 with a 10.5/13 score. Elisabeth Paehtz (Ger) who missed the title last year won it this time with ease. Former World U-14 girls champion Dronavalli Harika tied for the third place but finished fifth.G.N.Gopal made his maiden IM norm in the boys group. A total of 92 boys and 68 girls took part. Click 

Bastia: Milov Beats Anand 3-1 In The Finals

Vadim Milov, the Jewish player who moved from Russia to Biel in Switzerland a decade ago stopped Anand from winning another Corsica Masters title on Nov 5 at Bastia, France. Anand came back nicely in the second game after losing the first game to force the tie-break at 1-1. He lost both the tie-break games, after starting well in the first and overlooking a back rank theme in the second. Earlier, he beat Tomas Markowski (Pol) 2-0, Mikhail Gurevich (Bel) 2-0, Michael Adams (Eng) 3-1 in the earlier stages. Two other players from Chennai took part. Topalov Champion, Anand Second

Bulgarian Veselin Topalov played his career best chess at Argentina to win the FIDE World Title with a round to spare. He scored 10/14. His start of 7.5/8 was impressive. He remained undefeated.
