The games have been compiled from a number of sources. They represent a round-up of games played mainly during February and March, plus a number of others from earlier in the year which have only recently come to light. My thanks to all games inputters involved, and websites which have made games available. John Saunders

Headlines... Alexander Areshchenko wins the 2nd Coventry International, ahead of Kiril Georgiev... David Howell finishes ahead of two Swedish GMs at Jersey... Zoltan Gyimesi wins on tie-break in Cork... Leighton Williams wins Welsh Championship for the second time... Jack Rudd edges out Matthew Turner in the West of England Championship... Two England internationals, Simon Webb and John Fuller, have died... Cambridge defeated Oxford in the annual Varsity Match.

2nd Coventry International, 24-28 March 2005

The 2nd Coventry International, held at the Britannia Hotel, Coventry, was a resounding success, with ten GMs in a field of 134 players competing for a £7,300 prize fund. The winner of the £2,000 first prize was Alexander Areshchenko (UKR) with 7½/9, ahead of Zahar Efimenko (UKR) and Kiril Georgiev (BUL) on 7. A large group of British players finished amongst those on 6½: GMs Conquest and Wells, IMs Adam Hunt and Simon Williams and FMs Andrew Greet and Iain Gourlay (SCO). Although no IM or GM norms were made, several got close notably Polish IM Joanna Dworakowka who missed a grandmaster norm by half a point. Unrated Nottingham University student Alex Therrien (BCF 177) only narrowly missed an IM result and scored an amazing 2392 rating performance. Thanks to Mark Hogarth and the people who input all the games.

Jersey Chess Festival, 13-19 Feb 2005

There was a resounding success for two young players at the recent Jersey Festival. 14-year-old David Howell took first place ahead of two Swedish grandmasters, Jonny Hector and Tiger Hillarp Persson. In terms of individual results, 17-year-old Simon Fowler (whose BCF grade is only 170) did extremely well, claiming the scalp of GM Jonny Hector in the penultimate round, while David Howell beat GM Hillarp Persson in the last round to claim the first prize of £1,500.
Final Standings: 1 David Howell 6/7, 2 Jonny Hector 5½, 3 Simon Fowler 5, 4-7 Tiger Hillarp Persson, Matthew Dignam, Alan Spice, Mark G Fraser 4½, etc. The best game prize, voted on by BCM website readers went to Alan Spice for his win against Felix Buchkremer.
As a result of this tournament, David Howell's rating has gone up to 2416 on the April 2005 list and he thus gains his IM title (having already secured enough norms). Congratulations to him. He annotates two of his games from Jersey in the April BCM. My thanks to Arthur Brameld for sending all the games from Jersey (Open, Major and Minor), and to Adam Raoof for the results and crosstables.

58th West of England Championships, 25-28 March 2005

With only one other 2200+ player in the field, GM Matthew Turner might have been expected to walk it and take a third successive title, but it didn't happen. He conceded three draws, while Jack Rudd only conceded one. So the untitled Rudd scored his second WECU championship (his first was in 2001). Geoff Taylor was awarded the British Championship qualifying place as Rudd and Turner were pre-qualified, and Bonafont was ineligible. My thanks to William Frost for the games.
Website: http://www.keverelchess.co.uk/Html/woecu.html

Open Section: 1st Jack Rudd (208, Barnstaple) 6½/7 (£300.00); 2nd Matthew Turner (233, Millfield School) 5½ (£150.00); 3-4 Philip Bonafont (172, Hemel Hempstead), Geoff P Taylor (157, Gloucester) 4½ (and grading prize U160).

Philip Hutchings was awarded the newly-presented trophy, the Wilkinson Cup, on tie break, as Hjort was ineligible.

Minor Section U125): 1 C Gardiner (116, Falmouth) 6/7 (£150.00); 2-3 T Chapman (119, Guildford), R Desmedt (124, Netherton) 5½ (£62.50 each). Grading prize U90: B Childs (82, Bodmin) 4½ (£40.00)

123rd Varsity Match, Oxford vs Cambridge, 5 March 2005

The world's oldest regular chess fixture, the annual Oxford University vs Cambridge University match, took place at the RAC Club in London on 5 March. This was the 123rd match in the series which commenced in 1873 and has continued every year since, apart from during world wars. This year Oxford outrated Cambridge on every board and were hoping to cut the deficit in the overall series score. Despite being outrated on all eight boards, Cambridge won to take their series lead to 55 wins against Oxford's 50, with 18 matches drawn. Match sponsors were Barry Martin and Henry Mutkin. The match arbiters were Bob Wade and David Sedgwick. Simon Williams (Pembroke) was president (and captain) of the CUCC team, while Sophie Tidman captained OUCC. The Oxford reserve was Vygante Milasiute (a Lithuanian woman player, Lady Margaret's) and the Cambridge reserve was Nick Kingston-Smith (Fitzwilliam). The time limit was 40 moves in 2 hours, followed by all the moves in 1 hour.

1st European Union Championship, Cork, Ireland, 22-31 March 2005

The inaugural European Union Championship had an impressive line-up and was won by top seed Zoltan Gyimesi (HUN) on tie-break from Mateusz Bartel (POL). Both scored 8½/10. There were 13 GMs in the field. British players included Mark Hebden (7½), while Lorin D'Costa and David Howell both scored 6½. Gawain Jones, Andrew Ledger and Thomas Rendle all scored 6. The best Irish scorer was Alex Baburin on 7. 117 players took part. My thanks to Kevin O'Connell for sending press releases. Final standings in the crosstable section.

Bunratty Masters, Ireland, 18-20 February 2005

Thanks to Gerry Graham for a summary of results and crosstables. First in the prestigious Irish weekender was Brian Kelly with 5/6, ahead of Alexander Baburin and John Fedorowicz on 4½. Two other grandmasters, John Nunn and Joel Benjamin, finished on 4; Nunn lost to Fedorowicz and Benjamin lost to Baburin, both in round five. Prize for the best untitled Irish player went to Joe Ryan, and the grading prize was won by Tom Nixon. 307 players took part in the overall congress. All the games in the download. Final standings in the crosstable section. Website: http://members.aol.com/bunrattychess/

6th Wellington College International, 28-30 January and 12-13 February 2005

Ray Clark reports: This popular event was held once again at the prestigious venue of Wellington College in Crowthorne (established 1853) on the borders of Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey. This year was the largest so far with 57 players taking part, many of whom had played in previous years. The event also now draws some local spectators. All seem to enjoy both the event and walks through the attractive 400 acre estate or to the local town centre.
The event is considered to be unique in the UK as it takes place over two weekends so that players can play 9 weekend games for FIDE and BCF rating points (rate of play is 40 moves in 2 hours with remaining moves in a further 30 minutes). The prizes are around £1000 and include a paid place in the 2005 British Championships, awarded to the highest placed player who has not previously qualified.
IM Andrew Martin (who gives chess tuition at the college) is Director of the event which was sponsored this year by Specsavers. The event provides good playing conditions, including free light refreshments. This year, the 1st weekend took place in the Old Hall and moved for the 2nd weekend to the Old Art School where the top boards had a fantastically luxurious carpeted playing room adjoining the main playing hall. The event itself was well controlled by Neville Belinfante assisted by Ray Ryan.
This years the players included three IMs: Rolands Berzinsh (Latvia) 2454; Mark Ferguson (Eng) 2395; and Paul Littlewood (Eng) 2368. There were also five FIDE Masters: Andrew Greet 2389; Thomas Hinks-Edwards 2383; John Cox 2311; Rafe Martyn 2281; and Glen Charleshouse 2251.
At the end of the first weekend, Greet led with 4½/5, followed by Cox and Littlewood on 4, then 8 players on 3½ including Ferguson and Berzinsh. Key games included Berzinsh losing in round four to Littlewood who lost in turn to Greet in round five.
After a two-week break, play resumed for the last four rounds. Cox won against Littlewood in round six, while Hinks-Edwards drew with Cox in round eight but lost to Greet in round nine. Meanwhile, Ferguson continued to suffer from too many draws while Berzinsh finished strongly winning against Greet in round eight and Cox in round nine.
The final result was: 1-2 Greet, Berzinsh 7/9, sharing £600; 3 Cox on 6½ points (£100). Free place in 2005 British Championships was won by Paul Cooksey on 6 points. Most improved FIDE rated player was Thomas Pym on 5½ points. Best unrated player was Paul McIntyre on 5½ points. In addition there was a best game prize of £50. There are 8 games from this event in the download. Thanks to Ray Clark.

49th Southend Easter Congress, 24-28 March 2005

This year's Southend Congress featured an eight-player all-play-all tournament to commemorate the life of Jack Spiegel, long-time Southend organiser, who died last year. His nephew, Cliff Stanford, who sponsored the Redbus knock-out tournaments, once again generously put up the money for this extra event. To date there is only one game score available.

Jack Speigel Memorial (Total Prize Money £5000, 1st prize £1,000)
1 Daniel Gormally (Charlton) 5/7; 2-3 John Emms (Wood Green), Chris Ward (Wood Green) 4½; 4 Jim Plaskett (Guildford-ADC) 4; 5 Lawrence Trent 3½; 6 Neil McDonald 3; 7 Malcolm Pein 2½; 8 Graeme Buckley 1.
Southend Open (Prize money £1775): 1-5 David Ledger (Bedford, 203), Peter Poobalasingam (Millfield, 169), Stephen Ledger (Bedford, 182), David Spence (Ipswich, 194), Tim Hebbes (London, 161) 5½.
Five-Round 'A' (Prizes £200): 1-3 Martin Cutmore (Wood Green, 167), David Cutmore (Wood Green, 170), Ivor BN Smith (Writtle, 166) 3½/5
Five-Round 'B' (Prizes £200): 1 Don Dennis (Wickford, 120) 5/5, 2-4 Patrick Heneghan (Linton, 120), Rod Burroughs (Hutton, 118), Tony Packham (GLCC, 132) 3½
Five-Round 'C' (Prizes £200): 1 Sean Clarke (Basildon, 87) 4½/5, 2-3 Terry Barnell (London E, 84), Gary Perks (Southend, 92) 4.

Portsmouth Congress, 18-20 February 2005

Venue: Portsmouth Grammar School

Pat McEvoy reports: The final entry of 162 represented a modest increase on last year's disappointing figure, but still leaves much room for improvement. Of particular concern was the failure of the top two tournaments to sustain acceptable numbers. Last year's experiment with changing the boundary of the Major Tournament had the desired affect, but it appears that the side-affects may be at least as bad as the original problem. Much thought will be given to format for next year, with regular participants being invited to contribute their views.
On the positive side, the revamp of the premises that had occurred the previous summer came as a pleasant surprise to the players. The old Examination Hall has been converted to laboratories, so we had to move downstairs into the gymnasium. Previous experience downstairs had been of a cold and stark room. However, the new cushioned floor, new glazing and slightly more room made for an excellent venue. Upstairs, the renovated Senior Library and associated areas were absolutely wonderful. Many players offered their thanks for a very enjoyable weekend.
A number of strong players that I would regard as regulars were missing from the Premier Tournament, and one of my tasks before next year is to establish whether there was anything that I could have down to influence that. Last year's winner, Grandmaster Peter Wells, got off to a definitely shaky start, but he rallied to share first prize at the end. James Mansson, who had won the Major Tournament the previous two years, promoted himself to the Premier this year and acquitted himself quite well by sharing a grading prize.
The Major Tournament was a very close race, finally won by Michael Rabbitt from Swindon. There were at least half a dozen players in the Premier who could have moved down to the Major with a good chance of winning it.
The higher number of players in the Minor Tournament meant that the result went to the last round, but Talal Shakerchi from Ashtead looked solid throughout and emerged the winner by half a point.
The only 100% score of the weekend was achieved by Thilagini Anandajeyarajah from Richmond who won the Novices Tournament. She is only 13, and definitely one to watch for the future.
The News trophy for the best performance by a local player was awarded to Humphrey Lwambula who lives in Fareham.
Results in the Crosstable section

Bolton Easter Congress, 25-27 March 2005

Report by Rod Middleton: 83 competitors attend the event, which was held at the Excel Centre, Bolton. In the Open section the highest rated player, Stephen Gordon (221), suffered a setback in the second round when he lost to Martyn Goodger (184, Ely). This left the way open for second seed Jeff Horner (207) to lead by a clear point, on 4/4, entering the last round. Stephen, who had scored 3/4, played white against Jeff in the final round and won a titanic encounter. The only other player on 3/4 was Mike Surtees (187) who could only manage a draw, with black, against Brett Lund (197, Preston), which left Stephen and Jeff as joint winners.
Luke Boumphray and David Adam won the Major and Knights sections. In the Busy persons 10 minute blitz tournament a random draw was used and top seeds Stephen Gordon and Jeff Horner met in round two. Jeff won with black and ran out tournament winner with 7½/8. Results in the crosstable section.

Dyfed Congress, Fishguard, Wales, 18-20 February 2005

Minor U1500 (32 played): 1-6 AV Silver (Church Stretton), S Webster (York), NG Andrews (York), RG Sendall (Fishguard), T Barlow (Cardigan), J Burrows (Nidum) 4/5.

Coulsdon Easter Congress, 25-28 March 2005

Report by Scott Freeman
Friday and Saturday saw the traditional long play congress with 3 rounds on both days, whilst Monday saw a rapidplay competition during the day following by a blitz in the evening. Coulsdon's Marcus Osborne and Redhill's Dan Bisby shared the honours in the Open competition, scoring 5/6. Crystal Palace's John Bennett finished 3rd whilst the grading prize saw one of Coulsdon's young prodigies, James Foster, claim the prize with 3½/6. Considering the rules would have allowed him in 3 of the 4 lower sections in the competition, he can be well satisfied with his performance.
The U170 honours went to East Grinstead's young star, Joe Fraser. Joe won with 4½/6, fending off Richmond Junior's Paul Seymour and Wallington's Geoff Marchant, who both finished on 4; Tim beating Geoff in the final round to draw level with him and prevent his opponent from taking a share of 1st. Wimbledon's young star, Yang-Fan Zhou picked up the grading prize with 3/6.
The U145 competition produced a very tight finish, with Kingston's Jinwoo Song coming out on top with 5/6. He was just have a point clear of South Norwood's Dennis Rattray and Tunbridge Wells's Russell Goodfellow. The U125 grading prize went to Aaron Ironmonger of Hammersmith.
It was a shared 1st place in the Under 120 section; Robert Davidson of Brighton and Tristan Clayton scored 5/6, fending off another Brighton player, Stuart Wallace, who came 3rd with 4½. Anthony Duncan of Islington scored 4 to take the grading prize.

The Under 90 section saw victory for Portsmouth's John Carr, another winner with 5/6. Three players tied for 2nd place on 4½; they were Mark Cluett (Gravesend, Coulsdon), Chris Constable (Coulsdon) and Simon Roberts (Portsmouth). The grading prize was shared between 2 year 5 pupils from their respective schools, both scoring 3½/6; the latter was playing his first ever long play matches; Robert Lobo (Petts Wood & Orpington) and Duke Quinton (Coulsdon).
A field of 52 players battled out the latest six-round rapidplay during the day on Monday 28 March. The top two sections were merged as they were just short of a number suitable for a separate Swiss system; at the last rapidplay, we had no-one at all entering the Under 170 section. Ian Snape (Coulsdon) came out on top with 5½; a grandmaster draw in the last round completing his tournament success and making up for having to miss day 2 of the long play congress with illness (he was the top seed in it). The Under 140 section was also won with a score of 5½. Hendon's Jonathan Rubeck was the victor, leading Jinwoo Song (Kingston) across the line by a whole point.

Blitz Tournament: First place was eventually shared between GM William Watson and Coulsdon's Stuart Hamilton, who both ended up on 6/7.

Coulsdon Rapidplay, 12 Feb 2005

Scott Freeman reports: The Coulsdon Rapidplay was an interesting one for me as the arbiter. Half of our regular team of helpers were running a Bridge event in Banstead whilst I was lamenting one of our smallest entries for many months, not helped by a clash with an event in North London. Graeme Buckley did the business in the Open, drawing two of his games to end on 5/6. Ian Snape and John Hodgson sat just a half point behind him. Russell Goodfellow and Yang-Fan Zhou took joint honours from those in the Under 140 bracket, scoring 3/6. Obviously, they had also been battling with the Open players. Gordon Birch won the Under 110 section from David Wallis and Jeff Fleischer whilst the only maximum of the day saw John Sheekey win the Under 80 section from Caroline Foster, who finished on 4.

Open: 1 Graeme Buckley (Wimbledon) 5/6 (£35), 2-3 John Hodgson (Ilford), Ian Snape (Coulsdon) 4½ (£ 7-50 each).
U140 (merged with the Open for pairing purposes): Russell Goodfellow (Tunbridge Wells), Yang-Fan Zhou (Wimbledon) 3 (£25 each).
U110: 1 Gordon Birch (Camberley) 4½/6 (£35), 2-3 Jeff Fleischer (Coulsdon), David Wallis (Worthing) 4 (£ 7-50 each).
U80: 1 John Sheekey (Coulsdon) 6/6 (£35), 2 Caroline Foster (Coulsdon) 4 (£15).

Hartlepool Tournaments, 26 March 2005

Thanks to Keith Smith for the report.
The Les Boxx Memorial Rapidplay was held in the Touchdown pub, Hartlepool, on Saturday 26th March, in remembrance of Les Boxx who died earlier in the month. Les was a noted organiser of rapidplay events around the North-east and he will be sadly missed on the Circuit. There were 34 entries for the usual three sections. In addition to prize money (1st £40, 2nd £20, 3rd £10) there was a trophy for the winner of each section and the player who scored the highest number of points during the day was to receive the Les Boxx Memorial Cup.
Open: There were only 9 entries for the Open but it proved to be a tough section which finished in a three-way tie for first place. Bret Addison (Hartlepool), David Eggleston (Durham City) and Kemal Ozeren, also of Durham City chess club, all scored 4½/6 and each won £23.50 in prize money. David was awarded the section trophy on the tie-beaker - the sum of the opponents' scores.
Colin Walton has increased his lead over Jonathan Hawkins on the North-East Circuit leader board and David Eggleston has now moved into third place.

5th Leek Congress, 10-12 September 2004.

Report by Gus Brain (who apologised for sending this five months after the event!): Cheddleton and Leek Chess Club's Alex Richardson, from Hanley, caused a major upset when he beat the runaway top seed GM Mark Hebden, from Leicester, at the 5th Leek Chess Congress. Seeded eighth, Richardson remained unbeaten throughout, finishing equal first with 4/5 in the John Pointon & Sons 'Open' (no grade limit) section of the Congress, organised by the club and held at Westwood High School.
He was joined in equal first by the club's top board and third seed, Alan Smith, from East Didsbury, who was also unbeaten and also finished on 4. Smith also won the Lafarge Cement bursary of £160 for the qualifying place for the 2005 BCF British Championships at the Isle of Man next August. Also, Smith receives the title of Midland Counties Individual Champion as well as North Staffordshire and District Individual Champion and holds the Landon Memorial Trophy for one year.
Mark Hebden finally finished equal third with fifth seed David Hulmes, from Stockport, sharing combined third and fourth prize money of £300, while the Grading Prize of £50 was won by Michael Surtees, from Bolton. Also playing, among others, from the North Staffs League were Simon Edwards and Vlade Luzajic from the club plus Pat Bennett, from Holmes Chapel, and Malcolm Armstrong and Mihai Cladarar, from Stafford.
Over 130 players attended from all over the country, the bulk of whom played in the main sections of the Congress where they were put in descending grade order and then split into four roughly equal groups. In the 176-137 grade Leek United Building Society section, three players came equal first with 4/5 - 17-year-old Suzy Blackburn, from Holmes Chapel, Andrew Jaques, from Blackpool, and Paul Stephenson, from Liverpool, sharing combined prize money of £300. Obituaries

† Simon Webb (10 vi 1949, London - 13 iii 2005, Sweden)
Readers will be saddened to learn that English IM and correspondence GM Simon Webb died on 14 March in the most horrific circumstances, killed by his own disturbed adult son at his home in Sweden. Simon Webb was one of the most promising of the generation of players who made up the 'English Chess Explosion' of the 1970s. He was joint British U18 Champion in 1966 and once finished 4th in the European Junior Championship. He achieved his final IM norm in 1977 and shortly after switched to correspondence play, gaining his correspondence GM title in 1983. He moved to live in Sweden many years ago but remained active as a correspondence player throughout his life. He also played bridge internationally, in partnership with his younger brother Roger. He will probably be best remembered for his superb book Chess For Tigers, which provided the reader with sound and often humorous advice, particularly in regard to taking on stronger players. He will be sadly missed. A longer obituary will appear in the May BCM.

† John Fuller (12 v 1928 - 8 xii 2004, Carnforth)

John Fuller was one of the strongest British players of the 1950s, ranking as high as 3rd on the BCF grading list in 1958. He won the 1946 British Boys' (U18) Championship ahead of Gordon Crown and Leonard Barden, and the British correspondence chess championship in 1954 and 1955. He represented England in matches against Scotland and the Netherlands, and in the Clare Benedict team tournament. A design engineer by profession, he spent part of the war in Australia and was invalided out of national service by tuberculosis, which also affected his chess career. He played in two Hastings Premiers, making the best score by a home player on both occasions. He only played three times in the British Championship and had virtually given the game up by 1965. A longer obituary will appear in the May BCM.
