4th Joe Soesan Memorial Cup, Coventry 2003

Last Edited: Monday July 21, 2003 8:56 AM

Mike Donnelly reports: The 4th consecutive event to commemorate the well known local player Joe Soesan, who was twice British Veterans Champion, was held at the Standard Triumph Social Club in Coventry during April, May and June 2003. Games were played weekly in a six-round Swiss event of about 40 players.

The winner was A Baruch (5/6) taking the £500 silver Joe Soesan Memorial Cup.
Second equal were Dr. MJ Donnelly, E Goodwin, R Holmes, A Dawson, S Goodsir and L Welan on 4½/6 followed by S Weaver and D Redden on 4/6. The first three players mentioned were undefeated.

Tie-break for the second prize of a 35 mm camera (donated by Meriden Knights) was won by Mike Donnelly from Ed Goodwin following play-off games and then application of sum of opponents scores for these two players.

Of particular note was the play of 14-year-old Saul Goodsir who was in a few games outgraded by some 80 points but still managed to finish equal second. Also noteworthy is the consistent play of Andy Baruch who has finished first or first equal in the last three events.
