Solution

Kurchkin

1. Rb1 Rab4  (1... Rcb4 2.Nd4 Rxb6 3.Rb5+ Rxb5 4.Nc6 mate.)  2. Ra1+ (2. Nd6 Rc7+ 3. Nb7+ Rxb7+ 4. Rxb7 also wins.)  2... Ra4 3. Nd6 Rc7+ (3... Rxa1 4. Nxc4+ Ka4 5. Ra6+ wins the house.)  4. Nb7+ Rxb7+ 5. Kxb7 Rxa1 6. Ra6+ once again, wins everything is sight.

I came across this position in Chernev & Reinfeld's Fireside Book of Chess, but I can find out nothing more about the named author of this puzzle.  Anyone know anything?

{Ed.: shortly after posting this, Chessville received the following information via e-mail:

I hope I can help to solve a little bit this riddle.  The author of this study is Anatoliy Kuryshkin.  According to the database of Harold van der Heijden this composer published only this one study.  The magazine was "64", edition second half-year 1930, with a 5th HM for Kuryshkin´s work.  A second version exists with the black pawn on h2 instead of f2, but this one has been cooked.

Best regards, Gerhard Josten

Thanks Gerhard!!
