Solution

The Turk

Today's position is one of those used by the famous Automaton, The Turk.  Challengers from the audience were invited to choose one of several positions, of which this was one, and choose which side they wished to play.  This particular position is won for whichever side moves first.  For more about The Turk, read our review of  The Turk: The Life and Times of the Famous Eighteenth-Century Chess-Playing Machine, by Tom Standage.
