RulesHow the Pieces Move -- The KingKings move either horizontally, vertically, or along the diagonals, but may only travel one square per turn (an exception to this occurs during castling, as we shall see). In other words, a king moves like an extremely short-range queen. Observe the diagram below this paragraph. The white king may move one square in any direction, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, as long as his path is unimpeded. The white king may not move east, as he is blocked by the white knight. If the white king decides to move north, he must capture the black bishop.
