A Royal Pain

by Mary Elizabeth, as retold by
Rick Kennedy

My brother is a pain.

He calls me a pawnpusher.  I call him a wood-shifter.  He says I'm a rabbit.  I say he's a fish.  If I'm a tyro, then he's a patzer.

"Speaking of pots," says Mom from the living room, "you two wash the dinner dishes, and be nice to each other."

Once, I accidentally called a Knight a "horsie," and he teased me about it for three days.  I made sure when he called a Rook a "castle," the whole school knew about it!

He beat me two straight times with a 4-move checkmate, until my friend Sara explained it to me.  I got him back by gluing his King Pawn to the board.  The next time he played, his game rose up and then fell to pieces!

Even Dad laughed at that one.

My brother likes to create problems.  No surprise there.  The other day he showed me a new mate-in-one, and dared me to solve it.

"There's no Black King!" I told him.

"Sure there is," he replied smugly. "He's invisible."

I looked hard, and soon figured it out: White moves and checkmates. It was
kind of cute. (Can you see it?)

Sometimes my brother's not just a pain, he's a Royal pain. But he's still my brother.  If you still can't see the solution, click here.

I know how to make a business succeed, I know how to work harmoniously with others and I've made enough money to give chess the amount of time it deserves.
