The Kennedy Kids Mary Elizabeth, Jon & Matt
Oh...
A sequel to Jon's story - Amazing “Have I shown you my brilliant, crushing game against Will?” asked Jon, bounding into the family room and scooting up to the sofa. “Only a thousand times,” I admitted, lifting one eye off of the pages of the latest Harry Potter book. “I mean, the one where I obliterated him in merely THREE moves?” he continued. “I’ve seen it,” I told him. Now, what was that spell to make someone disappear…? “Admit it,” Jon persisted, “you’ve never seen anything like it in the whole wide world, have you?” “Nope.” Arguing would only keep him around longer. “And I’m a genius, aren’t I?” Jon beamed. “Little brother,” I told him, setting the book down carefully, “you’re an average player, not much better than me, rather decent for someone of your age. Ok?” I watched as he pulled himself up straight, and his mouth silently opened in the shape of a little “O.” Any second now I was sure we would see smoke begin to pour out of his ears, and lightening bolts flash from his nose. “It’s not anything YOU could do,” he finally said, petulantly. “Give me pawn and move odds,” I smiled, “and I will better you, for sure.” That at least put a smile back onto Jon’s face. “No amount of magic can make that happen.” He quickly grabbed and set up the chess board, taking the black pieces. I reached over and removed his f- and g-pawns. “Hey,” he protested, “you said pawn-and-move, not two!” “So I guess I owe you a pawn,” I told him. “Here – take my e-pawn.” I set the pawn aside, and proceeded to play 1.Qh5 mate.
“Oh” was all he could say, as I went back to my book.
