The Intrepid Warrior put his ear to the ground. "He's near." said he "Yes, yes, he's very near." He gathered some grass, from the side of the road, into his palm. Then, he counted off 64 steps and launched the grass into the air...
Now, it was all about noon in the middle of a hot sunny day. The Great Pawn Hunter was sitting on the steps of his porch sipping a glass of lemonade and basking in the sunshine. Now, days like this were few and far between. Most days, he had chores to do. But, today was his and he was enjoying every second of it for as long as it lasted. Now, you know as well as I, it never lasts long. He went to place his chess pieces onto his chess mat that he had put on the porch and discovered he was missing a bishop. He searched high and low but to no avail. "Well," said he "this is not going to ruin my bright sunny day." "But," he confessed "it does bring a cloud or two." So, in the place of the bishop he put a pebble.
He went into the house and emerged with a newspaper. He opened it and turned to the chess section. He was calculating a move variation when the wind picked up and ruffled his newspaper. He glanced up and looked around. He didn't see a thing. But, a feeling went through him. He only got this feeling when he sat down to play...a "rated" game of chess. "A challenge?" he thought. But, from who and from where? ...
Studiously, the Intrepid Warrior analyzed the wind current. Its ever changing course would lead him onward. "South, West, North, ...East! Yes, East! Oh he's near. He's very very near." said he and off he went repeating his calculating method every sixty four steps...
Meanwhile, the Great Pawn Hunter gazed around him, he noticed a small figure running towards him at full stride and shouting something. As she made her way up to him, the Great Pawn Hunter said "Hi, Restless. Do you want to play a game of " But, The Restless Knight grabbed his hand and pulled it towards her and said urgently "Quick you must come and see this!" Well, before they could go off of the porch, they noticed a man, dressed in black, crossing at the top of their street. In the middle of the road, he stooped. He put his ear to the ground and launched something into the air. He paused for a calculating moment and...turned in their direction...
"Who do you think he is?" asked the Great Pawn Hunter. The Restless Knight replied in a whisper "Shhhh! Count." "Count what?" whispered the Great Pawn Hunter. The Restless Knight whispered "His footsteps. Count his footsteps."
Now, the Intrepid Warrior was finishing his steps and the Great Pawn Hunter was finishing his count "sixty two, sixty three, sixty four!" when the Intrepid Warrior stopped right in front of the Great Pawn Hunter's porch. The Great Pawn Hunter had come face to face with a puzzling enigma. The two chess players gazed, in curiosity, down at the mysterious person. The Intrepid Warrior put his ear to the ground. Then he got up and threw some grass into the air. Well, the grass went straight up and then came straight down landing all over him. "He's here! I've found him!" shouted the Intrepid Warrior to the air.
The Restless Knight smiled and asked the Intrepid Warrior "Who's here?" The Intrepid Warrior looked up at her from the road and out came his words "My king, my king is here." The Great Pawn Hunter sat motionless. The Intrepid Warrior's words had reached the very fiber of the Great Pawn Hunter's being. For when the Great Pawn Hunter played chess...he was the king!
"Would you like to play a game of chess?" asked the Great Pawn Hunter to the Intrepid Warrior. The Intrepid Warrior walked up three steps to the landing of the Great Pawn Hunter's porch. He gazed at the pebble, in the place of where the bishop was, and asked the Great Pawn Hunter "Do you miss it?" The Great Pawn Hunter replied "Desperately!" The Intrepid Warrior smiled and said "Yes, I'll play for you." Well, they played their game of chess and the two chess players fought valiantly.
