Improve Your Chess
with the Right Chess Moves:
A Knight on the rim is dim
Develop knights towards the center where they have more power and can cover
more squares. A knight on the rim (edge of the board) is dim since it attacks or
defends half the squares than if it were in the center. In the opening, try to
develop knights before bishops, and keep them towards the center. The knight is
the only piece that can jump over a pawn, so you cannot lock in a knight. Since
knights do not have long range mobility, it is important to develop them first,
but not to the edges of the board. Aim for quick development of the knight. Its
main power is its forking ability and this is often overlooked by beginners.
Here are some sample short games where a knight on the rim is dim.
