Tim's Nino Tips

My Nino review
My home page

1. Why are there sometimes two different .exe files for shareware?

There are two processors that CE runs on: MIPS and SH3. The Nino and the Casio units use the MIPS architecture (the Nino uses a chip made by Philips, but it uses the MIPS instruction set).

2. How to install small, freeware programs

Many freeware programs don't come with the fancy installing software. You have to do it yourself ...
But it's the same as Windows 95.
a) dock your Nino
b) copy the program file .exe from your PC to a directory anywhere you like on your storage card or your Nino's main memory. Do this by browsing your Nino from the mobile devices window of Windows 95: double click on the Nino icon.
c) copy and paste a shortcut from the Nino's copy of the .exe file into the Windows/Start Menu folder.
Now you will see your program in the Start menu of the Nino.

3. Recharging problems.

The Philips site (http://www.nino.philips.com) has an interactive FAQ. There you will learn that sometimes your Nino's battery does not properly contact the recharging terminals. You can open the battery compartment and push the battery around until this is fixed and the charge LED starts flashing. I got sick of this, and wrapped two small pieces of aluminium foil around each of the terminals, to improve the contact. Since then: no problems. The recharging terminals are the ones that contact the battery pack along its longer side. Without good contact, the Nino thinks it has a non-rechargeable battery installed.

4. A toothpick for resetting

Chop a wooden toothpick in half, and place it in the battery compartment, on top of the battery. If you need to reset the Nino, you will be ready, anywhere, anytime. Wood is good because it doesn't conduct electricity, so it can't hurt anything.

5. Get Star Tap from http://www.thumbsupsoft.com

This program is $10, and it works fine even if you don't register it.

6. Recharge frequently

This is good for NiMH batteries. I point this out just in case you are used to the NiCd discipline of allowing the batteries to run flat before charging them. This is not optimal for NiMH batteries, which like to be topped up often.

7. Get the Find fix program from Microsoft

I already mentioned this in my Nino review page. If your Nino is crashing and hanging while you searching Contacts, you need this software.
