To all Manitoba schools, grade 7 and above
Dear Sir or Madam:
The Manitoba Chess Association is pleased to extend an invitation to your school to participate in the Manitoba High School Chess Championship to be held on Sunday, March 13, 2005 from 9:30 a.m to 5:00 p.m. at the University of Winnipeg.
This will be a team competition. Each school is invited to send a team of four students (plus an alternate if they wish). The tournament will consist of five rounds of games. In each round, four players from each school will play individual matches against four players from another school. Players will be allowed a maximum of 30 minutes per game.
The Manitoba High School trophy and individual trophies will be awarded to the team that scores the most points (1 point for each win, half point for each draw). Cash prizes will also be awarded to the chess clubs at the schools of the top three teams.
Students must be in grade 7 to 12 to be eligible to play, and any school encompassing any of these grades is eligible to submit a team. (For example, a K-8 school can submit a team, providing the players are in grade 7 and/or 8).
The tournament is to be held in room 2M70 at the University of Winnipeg. Teams are asked to arrive at the University by 9:30 a.m., with the first round starting at 10:00.
There is no entry fee, however schools are asked to pre-register their teams by contacting Blair Rutter at 253-6961, or by sending an email to blairrutter@shaw.ca. Entries will be accepted until Friday, March 11.
The Manitoba Chess Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting chess in Manitoba. The origins of the Association date back over 100 years. For more information on the Association, please visit our website at http://www.chessmanitoba.com.
We look forward to your school’s participation in this tournament.
Sincerely,
Blair Rutter
President

Jonathon Zaczek won the tournament with 3.5 points out of 4. Edward Tang, Jay Khedkar, and Manfred Schulz were half a point behind. Final crosstable and games from the tournament can be found on the "Results and games" page (see Main Menu). Again please check your games for errors. It lookes to me like 3 or 4 games ended in time trouble and some outcomes are inconsistent with final positions according to scoresheets. In the upper left corner there is information about our next weekend tournament. Of course, next TNT starts next Tuesday.
1: Tang, Edward - Zaczek, Jonathon =-=
2: Proulx, Roy - Schulz, Manfred 0-1
3: Khedkar, Jay S. - Van Wyk, Joseph 1-0
4: Prince, Colin - Czarny, Keith =-=
5: Rumpel, Chris - Greenberg, Harley 0-1
6: Lafreniere, Adrian - Reimer, Bruce 0-1

OK, the tournament is over so is the Annual General Meeting. Blair Rutter or Cecil Rosner will write about the AGM, I just want to say few words about the tournament. Kevin Gentes won the event with a perfect score, followed by Jay Khedkar with 4 points. Collin Anderson and Edward Tang shared third place. Watch out for a new kid on the block. Daniel Oberton has shown pretty mature level of play for 12 years.
Below you can find final round results. To see the games and crosstable click "Results and games" option of the main menu. For pictures go to the "Picture Gallery".
If you spot an error in the game scores please email me corrections. I had trouble with some of the scoresheets, so errors are very likely.
1: Anderson, Collin 1826 Gentes, Kevin 2321 0-1
2: Boron, Anthony 1976 Khedkar, Jay S. 1955 0-1

4: Rutter, Blair 1742 Nikouline, Alex 2026 0-1

We beat last year's number with 20+ players. The tournament is also pretty strong by nowadays standards. More than half of the players are class A and stronger. That promises very interesting and even matchups in the second round. The first round also produced a couple of surprises. Below are the results, I will enter and post the games after the tournament is over. Second round pairings will be finalized tomorrow. Alex
