Description:
OpenChess is a GNU/GPL chess program for the PalmOS Platform, for color handhelds (3.5 and higher).

Basically, OpenChess is a simple retailoring of the old but famous GNU Chess2 program, from the Free Software Fundation, which was originately designed for DOS/Unix platforms, in alphanumeric mode.

OpenChess gives you the same features as GNU Chess 2, but with with a complete presentation in colors !

This first version of OpenChess is fully based on GNU Chess2... Gets already a smart engine, a 240 openings library, and the port effort onto PalmOS was minimized, as this original version was designed for console interface, or DOS window.

Most porting effort has been placed on the GUI interface, while the engine code has been left almost unchanged !

Currently, it is available in colors (love that !), and Hires; grayscale or B&W; versions can be very easily issued after.

Good game. The graphics are awsome, but the chess engine is predictable. I haven't encountered any bugs yet. Overall, it is a fairly good game. I assume that the guys at open source will keep working on it until it is a escellent piece of palmware. Thanks to all the people who work on it.

Nice, but I had problems with it crashing every now and then. I think it was because of the Lingo language app I run. Other than that, it was a good app.

I've noticed it gives false checkmates (against the computer player) which is frustrating.

Really good to find a full featured free chess program. I've been a big fan of gnuchess for years. I'm used to seeing the board oriented with a white square in the lower right hand corner, so I'm a little thrown off. Great work!

Fantastic chess program, particularly considering the price tag! Brings to mind the words of Emo Phillips: "A little computer beat me at chess... It was no match for me at kickboxing though!" 73k of memory well spent.

Nice! But there are a few things that must be repaired:
1. If pawn captures en-pasant and then undo, the captured pawn dissapears!
2. Doesn't realize draws sometimes! (this is serious). For instance, check {W: Ka1, B: Kc3, Qc2}. I got this in a game, and it claimed "Black mates", since none of the possible moves for white was legal.

Looks very good, very slick and easy to use. A black and white or greyscale version (that is easy on the eyes) would be very nice, then I could actually play some games on my B/W Visor Pro.

Really great - but: a b/w frontend should soon be implemented as on a b/w display its very difficult.

Its strength is moderate and some features aren't implemented yet (saving games...), but it looks nice and IT'S FREE! Plus, hi-res pieces on Sony Clie. Good job -- looking forward to upcoming releases!

Amazing freeware program ! Strong enougth to give you a true opponent. Already a 1850-2000 rating. GUI may propose a more professionnal layout. Definitely a must have !!
