OpenChess is a GNU/GPL chess program for the PalmOS Platform, for color handhelds (3.5 and higher).
Basically, OpenChess is a simple retailoring of the old but famous GNU Chess2 program, from the Free Software Fundation, which was originately designed for DOS/Unix platforms, in alphanumeric mode.
OpenChess gives you the same features as GNU Chess 2, but with with a complete presentation in colors !
Today, many Chess programs already exist for the PalmOS platform. Some of them are very good players.
However, there's actually no free/GPL Chess game for PalmOS, like for other platforms; for instance, the famous GNU chess, which has been ported on a lot of different platforms, did not exist yet on PalmOS. OpenChess is thus an opportunity to start a new concept of free Chess program, based on an OpenSource program, for the PalmOS platform. This will be the first stone, for integrating new versions in the future.
This first version of OpenChess is fully based on GNU Chess2... might consider it a bit out of date, but it has already a smart engine, a 240 openings library, and the port effort onto PalmOS was minimized, as this original version was designed for console interface, or DOS window. Most porting effort has been placed on the GUI interface, while the engine code has been left almost unchanged !
Currently, it is available in colors (love that !), and Hires;
grayscale or B&W versions can be very easily issued after.
