Round 8 27th March 2005

Blindfold first three round 8 games

Anand against Leko was a 20 moves draw in a Ruy Lopez. Topalov against Bareev was a long and intricate Semi-Slav which ended in a draw. Vladimir Kramnik was defeated by Alexander Morozevich. Morozevich beat off Kramnik's attack and then fairly quickly obtained a winning position.

Blindfold second three round 8 games

Shirov against Gelfand was a 20 move draw in a Petroff. Vallejo Pons is having a good blindfold event so far and is now in a share for second behind Anand. In round 8 he contested an interesting Sicilian Sveshnikov against Van Wely before coming out on top in the endgame. Ivanchuk against Svidler was a well contested Classical Sicilian in which Ivanchuk held something of an advantage for the middle part of the game but couldn't make it count.

Rapid first three round 8 games

The rapid section as a whole was a bit of a bloodbath. All the round 8 games ended decisively and white ended up winning only one game! After his fantastic start Viswanathan Anand hadn't won in a while. He put this right with a very nice win on the black side of a Petroff. Bareev - Topalov was pretty level out of the opening which was a Classical Nimzo Indian, Bareev seemed to lose his way and allowed Topalov an initiative and space advantage which he used to win. Vladimir Kramnik got revenge for his loss in the blindfold game against Alexander Morozevich. He gradually got the initiative and he won nicely.

Rapid second three round 8 games

Gelfand against Shirov was a sharp Semi-Slav. Gelfand lost his way in the middle game and ended up with rook against knight and three pawns down which Shirov converted. Van Wely against Vallejo was a tremendously long manoevering game which ended suddenly on move 90 when Vallejo dropped a piece. Peter Svidler against Vassily Ivanchuk was a fairly wild and creative game with a number of errors by both sides. Ivanchuk ended up the winner.
