I recently got requested to upgrade MSN Messenger 7.? to the latest 7.0.0816
Since then, every time I attempt to sign into msn messenger I get the following error message:
"We were unable to sign you into MSN Messenger, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 81000306"
I have looked up this error on google, most places suggest turning off the proxy and sock settings allowing only the tcp settings.
I go to Tools, Options, Connection, Then Advanced Settings, and untick all of them apart from TCP. Then under TCP I click "Test TCP Connection", which says: "Resolving the server name... Connecting to the server... Connected, verifying ability to send data now... Success, you can connect to the MSN Messenger service." So that is working. I press OK, and OK again.
Back to the options menu, I click "Test Connection..." "Please wait...", So I wait... for about 1 or 2 mins. Then there is an error: "We were unable to troubleshoot your connection to the .NET Messenger service. There is possibly a problem with the service, your Internet connection, or your proxy settings. Please check your settings and make sure you are connected to the Internet."
I am infact definatly connected to the internet, via my router, and am using it to make this post.
One additional thing to note, I do have MSNPlus installed, however this shouldn't interfear.
I have no other firewall software apart from the default windows one, which should work anyway.
So now what are my options? Where do I go from here? How do I fix it? What is the solution to this problem?
Thanks.

this is the description of this Error from MSN help Center :
Error 81000301 or 81000306: You cannot sign in to MSN Messenger
When you try to sign in to MSN Messenger, you may receive the following error message: We were unable to sign you in to MSN Messenger, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet.
Try the following to help resolve the situation: Make sure you are connected to the Internet. Make sure you have installed the latest version of . Make sure you have installed the latest available updates for your operating system. For Microsoft® Windows® operating systems, website. If you are using a firewall, make sure that MSN Messenger is allowed full access through the firewall. For more information, see the firewall documentation. Verify the Advanced Connection settings for MSN Messenger. Notes
If your computer is part of a corporate network, contact your network administrator to make sure that the network allows access to the MSN Messenger service. If you use a dial-up connection, the connection may be timing out. Try to connect again later.
also i advise you to see with the windows FireWall to see if the MSN is authorised to connect if yes try to see if the PORT# : 1080 is authorized to be used .
normally your problem doesn't go beyond these probabilities .
I am connected to the internet. I have the latest version. Windows is up-to-date. I am using a firewall, both software (windows) and hardware (router), the software one is setup to accept, but I was not aware that you needed open ports on the router to use msn messenger, infact i'm 100% sure you don't as i've had it like this for 2+ years now. The advanced connection settings are correct.
This is a personal computer, not part of a corporation. I am not on dialup, I am using ADSL.
1080 is sockets, that shouldn't make a difference.
In conclusion, my problem goes beyond this...
I will uninstall MSN Plus and reinstall MSN messenger.
