Russia cruise to Olympiad victory (Refresh this page for latest updates)
There was no high drama on the final round of the Chess Olympiad. Russia only needed a decent score from the final match against Georgia, and the match was soon drawn on all four boards. The Olympiad champions are Alexander Khalifman, Alexander Morozevich, Peter Svidler, Sergei Rublevsky, Konstantin Sakaev and Alexander Grischuk.
The battle for second place was tighter, but a solid performance from the Germans secured them the silver medals in the match against England. Hübner drew an unusual ending against Short: three pawns and knight against rook and knight (see diagram on the right: black to move played 56...Ke3 and drew). Dautov sealed up a wonderful tournament performance with a win against Julian Hodgson.
Hungary could only manage a draw against Slovenia, which allowed the Ukraine team to catch up with them. Ruslan Ponomariov really had a fantastic result here, clearly eclipsing the Ukrainian number one Vassily Ivanchuk.
