Indian Airlines & Buddhibal Kreeda Trust emerge Champions

Indian Airlines (21) emerged Champion holding on top seeds PSPB by half a point in the National Team Chess Championship organized by Buddhibal Kreeda Trust Co-sponsored by Indian Oil- KPIT Cummins, at Manohar Mangal Karyalaya, Pune, here today.

On the top board IA were held to a 2-2 draw by LIC. GM Tejas Bakre of IA continued his fine run and defeated IM Shriram Jha (LIC). IM D.K.Sharma of LIC scored an equalizer by defeating IM C.S.Gokhale (IA). IM Satyapragyan (IA), who showed good form in the tournament, was held to a draw by Anup Deshmukh (LIC) while WGM Vijayalakshmi (IA) drew with IM Atanu Lahiri (LIC).

On the Second board PSPB needing 3.5 for the championship could muster up 2.5 points only, with their 3 GMs held to a draw by a determined TN team. Only consolation came in the form of a win by GM Abhijeet Kunte who defeated IM Poobesh Anand (TN). GM Ganguly drew with Deepan Chakraborty(TN), IM Balsubramaniam held GM Sandipan Chanda to a draw and Gunasekaran (TN) drew with GM R B Ramesh. In the end PSPB (20.5) fell short of half a point and ended up second below IA (21) who took the championship for the first time.

On the third board, Bank Sports Board (BSB) defeated CRSB 3.5- 1.5 to finish third. GM Pravin Thipsay, IM Sudhakar Babu, IM Ravi Hegde scored wins for BSB. IM Prathamesh Mokal (BSB) was held to a draw by Vinod Bhagwat (CRSB). BSB finished third with 19 points.

In Women section Budhhibal Kreeda Trust team won the championship for the second time in a row. BKT today defeated Chandigarh 4-0. Overnight leaders TN could score only 2.5 points against LIC. This gave BKT a clear half a point lead and the championship.

Prize distribution ceremony was held at 4 pm and Guests of Honor Mr. Kishor Patil (CEO) of KPIT Cummins and Mr. Subroto Varma, Chief Divisional Manager Indian Oil distributed prizes.

LIC (17.5) drew with Indian Airlines (21) 2-2; Petroleum (20.5) beat Tamil Nadu `A' (18) 2.5-1.5; Banks Sports Board (19) beat Central Revenue (16) 3.5-0.5; Buddhibal Kreeda Trust (Jr.) (15.5) lost to Maharashtra (17.5) 0.5-3.5; Western Railway (15.5) drew with Tamil Nadu `B' (15.5) 2-2; South Central Railway (17) beat D'souza's Academy (Jr.) (13.5) 3.5-0.5; Sersa Academy (16) beat D'souza's Academy (Sr.) (14) 3-1; Buddhibal Kreeda Trust (Sub-jr.) (14.5) beat Southern Maharashtra (14) 2.5-1.5; Young Masters Academy (15) beat Ghatkopar Academy (13.5) 2.5-1.5; MP (14.5) beat Services (12.5) 3-1; Nasik (14) beat Gujarat (12.5) 2.5-1.5; Chandigarh (12.5) beat Vidarbha (12) 2.5-1.5; Creative Young Indians (12) drew with BSNL (12) 2-2; Anand Buddhibal Mandal (11) lost to Bihar (12) 1.5-2.5; J&K (11) drew with Alliance Academy (10.5) 2-2; Blind Association (12) beat Bhandara (6.5) 3.5-0.5; Checkmate Club (11) beat Aurangabad (8.5) 3-1. 

Final Placings :

1. Indian Airlines (21), 2. Petroleum (20.5), 3. Banks Sports Board (19), 4. Tamil Nadu `A' (18), 5-6 LIC and Maharashtra (17.5), 7. South Central Railway (17), 8-9 Central Revenue and Sersa Academy (16), 10 Western Railway (15.5).

LIC (14) lost to Tamil Nadu (16) 1.5-2.5; J&K (0) lost to Sersa Academy (8.5) 0-4; BKT (Maharashtra) (16.5) beat Chandigarh (3) 4-0
