Andhra Pradesh would host the second Chess World Cup 2002 at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad from October 9 to 21, 2002 in which a strong Indian contingent led by Former World Champion Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand and WGM Koneru Humpy would take part.
A total prize money of US Dollars 280,000 would be at stake and the format would be decided by FIDE at its General Council soon, All India Chess Federation (AICF) President N Srinivasan and Secretary P T Ummer Koya told reporters here today.
Viswanathan Anand of India would be defending his title in the men's sections with top players including Antoly Karpov and Alexander Morozevich (Russia), Michael Adams (England), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria), Peter Leko (Isreal), Judit Polgar (Hungary), Chen Zhu (China) battling it out on the sixty four squares for top
honours.
As host country, India has the eligibility to field extra players with P Harikrishna, Sasikiran, S Vijayalakshmi,
Aarthie Ramaswamy and Swati Ghate being the probables, Koya said. Asked about the controversy over Koneru Humpy's Grandmaster title (Men), Koya said "We don't want to enter into any controversy. I believe the papers were sent to FIDE for ratification which would be done at its General Council slated for October." Earlier, the AICF delegation called on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and sought his help for the conduct of the mega event to be held at Ramoji Film City on city outskirts.
