MATCH REPORTS

24th October 2004
Hammersmith & Fulham 12 : Guildford 25
Southeast West 4
Home

Hammersmith and Fulham Ladies encountered a well drilled opposition that knocked the wind out of their winning sails at Hurlingham Park.  With more foul tirades than a brothel at closing time, the match was hard fought both verbally and physically.

With some bewildering refereeing decisions scores remained dead locked nil-all until the 20th minute when Guildford broke the line for their first try.  The Hammers set things right by regaining possession with Linda Merritt producing her signature run up the middle, supported by Charlie Veale, then swinging the ball wide to Nicola Collins for the girls first try just 2 minutes after Guildfords.

Guildford struck back with 2 quick tries, holding the line is a must or the Guildford #12 exploits the gap every time.

The dying stages of the first half saw a protracted session where a penalty try should have been awarded after Guildford repeatedly broke the line.  After several attempts Amy Dollery found the try line bringing the break back to only 3 points.

The second half saw Guildford score twice at 15 and 30 minutes, Hammersmith must look to maintain possession in mauls in order to compete in attack.

Hammersmith played with the same support and determination they took into Game 2 but were outclassed by fitness and experience.  Guildford is the team that the Hammers will look to beat by seasons end.

TRIES: scorers; Nicola Collins & Amy Dollery.

10th October 2004
Hammersmith & Fulham 79 : Hertford & Welwyn 0
Southeast West 4
Away

The juggernaut that is the Hammersmith and Fulham Ladies try scoring machine kept to its winning formula beating Hertford and Welwyn by 13 tries to none/

Proving their first match was no fluke, the girls combined to produce champagne rugby dotted by individual brilliance.

Estelle Bentall delivered driving runs required by forwards, with consistent support from the rest of the girls up front.  Tries to Estelle, Charlotte Hood and Jess Veale were just reward for their hard work.  A try from the back of the scrum by Tara Kerr-Elliot proving the girls up front think as well as run hard.

The backs set the park alight with fancy footwork and defence that left Hertford and Welwyn reeling.  Colette McCarthy opened proceedings with the first try then followed up producing the game’s biggest hit with a crunching tackle at the beginning of the 2nd half.  Amy Dollery stepped around 3 defenders to put points on the board.  Nicola Collins pushed over from great support play.  Linda Merritt in the move of the match combined a great run, chip ahead and regather to score.  Arianna Rophia also scored 2 tries with blistering pace.

The coaches are very pleased with the results of the match and also the ability of the girls to combine at such an early stage in the season.  New players have already found their feet with support play during attack and defence an obvious strength.

Congratulations on a great win good luck against Guilford Saturday 24th at home.

TRIES: Jessica Veale, Estelle Bentall, Charlotte Hood, Tara Kerr-Elliot, Amy Dollery, Colette McCarthy, Linda Merritt, Arianna Rophia and Nicola Collins.

26th September 2004
Hammersmith & Fulham 52 : Ealing Jades 5
Southeast West 4
Away

Hammersmith and Fulham Ladies opened their 2004-2005 campaign with an inspirational win again Ealing Jades at Trailfinders Ground Ealing.

Fielding a full 15, new recruits alongside old hands, the Hammers dominated play from kick-off, stamping authority on the match and denying the Jades any chance to get into the action.

Good weather, good play, good looks made hard running and tackling forwards Nelly, Jess, Charlotte, Phillipa, Kaye and Ang unstoppable.  A creative backline in Charlie, Amy, Colette, Andrea and Linda created gaps, left the defence in tatters and converted scoring opportunities to points each time.  A lull in action with scrappy play and turnovers was soon put right when Tara ‘WHO-SCHEDULES-A-WEDDING-DURING-THE-SEASON?!’ Kerr-Elliot nee Davis, took the field and led from the front with bursting runs and tackles that end promising careers.

On the sideline Club Coach JPG was impressed with textbook support at breakdowns, line-out possession and spoils.

There was never any doubt about the outcome of the match, just bets on how devastating the score would be.  Congratulations girls on a fine start and well done to Helen, Andrea and Kaye for a promising start in rugby with the Hammers.

TRIES: Charlie Veale, Nicola Collins x2, Charlotte Hood, Amy Dollery, Colette McCarthy, Linda Merritt x2.
