Smith and Williamson British Championship, Scarborough (1-14 August 2004): Scottish grandmaster Jonathan Rowson is the new British Champion, scoring 8½/11, ahead of Peter Wells and Simon Williams on 8. Ketevan Arakhamia, resident in Edinburgh, retained the British Women's Championship, scoring 6½/11. Norms achieved: GM norm - Simon Williams, IM norms: Gawain Jones (his 3rd and final) and Craig Hanley achieved his rating threshold to get the IM title. Also, Joe Redpath, 18, of the Hamilton club in Scotland, achieved an IM norm by winning the Major Open. 1 J Rowson 8½/11, 2-3 P Wells, S Williams 8, 4-7 J Emms, A Greet, R Gwaze, P Motwani 7½, 8-9 M Hebden, S Knott 7, etc. The games have been included on the download as there have been one or two amendments after the event. Chess Olympiad - British Teams: although no formal announcement has yet been made, the BCF/England team going to the Mallorca Olympiad, 14-31 October, is expected to be: 1 Adams, 2 Short, 3 McShane, 4 Speelman, 5 Hebden, 6 Wells, with Allan Beardsworth as team manager. The team is being backed by Deloitte and a number of other private individuals. The women's team is Harriet Hunt, Jovanka Houska, Heather Richards and Melanie Buckley, with John Emms as manager. Allan Beardsworth's name will be new to many - he's a 42-year-old partner at Deloitte, but also a strong chess player who played on a high board in the annual Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity match from 1982 to 1984, and is a close friend of Nigel Short. See this webpage - http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/business/professionals/s/129/129577_first_knight_allan_goes_for_gold.html - where it says that "by the time he reached 14 [Beardsworth] was ranked the third best teenage player in the world". Really?

111th Scottish Championship, Hamilton (10-18 July 2004): Scottish no.1 Jonathan Rowson recovered from being a point behind to win the Scottish Championship, held at New Douglas Park, the home of Hamilton Academicals football club. He scored 7½/9. Danish IM Jacob Aagaard, resident in Scotland but ineligible for the national title, finished second with 7, a point clear of the field which included GMs Motwani and McNab. Aagaard thus secured his second GM norm. Crosstable. Website: http://www.chessscotland.com/scotchamps/SCMaster.htm

2nd Staunton Memorial, Simpsons (23-29 August 2004): As last year, a four-player double-cycle tournament was held at the famous 19th century chess venue, Simpsons in the Strand in London, to commemorate Britain's greatest player of that era, Howard Staunton. 4NCL: Press Release - Saturday 18 September sees the start of the 12th season of Britain’s premier chess league, the 4NCL National Chess League. During the close season a number of new clubs has joined the league, which now has 64 teams, an increase of more than 18% over last season. The decision taken a couple of years ago to hold each set of rounds over two weekends (Divs 1 & 2 on the first, Divs 3 & 4 on the second) has enabled the league to continue to expand and to accommodate all new applicants. The 28-team fourth division will be run as two equal strength sections of 11 rounds, with two promotion places to the third division on offer in each section. Alongside the entry of a number of second, third and fourth teams of existing league members, the fourth division has attracted a number of new club teams as follows: Monmouth, Hilsmark Coventry, Gloucestershire Gambits, Halesowen, Addlestone... full details of the 4NCL, including all contact details, team registration lists, fixtures, results, game scores and a variety of news reports can be found on the league’s website at www.4NCL.co.uk.

Match of the Generations / British Land Challenge (17 August 2004): Mike Basman ran the annual outdoor chess exhibition on an outsize chess board at London's Broadgate. This year's theme, in accordance with the BCF's centenary celebrations, was 'young and old'. There were young and old semi-finals: First Sheila Dines, the British Under 11 Champion, played Eugene Geidelberg, last year’s British Land UK Chess Challenge Under 11 Champion, in a fifteen minute match. "Eugene won, but the players were either so nervous or so unused to playing on a giant board, that between them they managed to blunder three rooks," said Mike Basman.    The main bout of the day was the heavyweight clash between two British Champions, Peter Lee (British Champion 1965) and Bill Hartston (British Champion 1973 and 1975). After a close middle game, Bill gained the advantage by positioning a knight at e4. Lee immediately broke back with a sacrifice to dislodge the piece. Then Lee was presented with a problem: to take or not to take the pawn at d5? He took it, but a move too late and resigned as soon as it became clear that he was losing a rook.
Finally came the “Match of the Generations”, as part of the British Chess Federation’s Celebration of 100 years in existence. The two winners from the junior and veteran matches played each other with Eugene Geidelberg having the advantage of the white pieces. Eugene quickly gained the advantage and put the champion under pressure. Hartston managed to exchange into an inferior ending, and when his young opponent over-pressed, he demonstrated his excellent technique by winning an ending of good knight against bad bishop. Coulsdon Autumn Congress (4-5 September 2004): A total of 102 played in five sections in what was the 1st round of the 2004-5 Long Play Grand Prix. The punishing schedule of 3 rounds on Saturday was followed by the slightly less pressured 2 rounds on the Sunday. The top title of Open winner was shared by Thomas Rendle and Martin Taylor who held off the Coulsdon challenge of Ian Snape and Michael Franklin. No less than 6 players shared the under 190 grading prize, so with a field of 17 in the top section, over half won something! Two long games for Tim Seymour clinched the Under 170 title. He managed to win a queen v rook end game in round 4 before successfully claiming a draw by repetition in round 5 against Raul Portugal, who consequently shared 2nd with 3 other players. Kingston's Jinwoo Song took the honours in the Under 145 section whilst Coulsdon's James Foster struck again with another tournament victory to take the Under 120 section. 54th Richmond Rapidplay (18 July 2004): The 54th Richmond Rapidplay attracted a record-breaking 138 entries, 23 of which won prize money. The Open didn't have the strength in depth as seen in previous rapidplays this season, one GM and two IMs entering, compared to the usual 5-6 IMs that can normally be seen at Richmond. First prize was shared between the strongest chess playing twins in the country - Nick (GM) and Richard (IM) Pert both finishing on undefeated 5/6, half a point ahead of Simon Williams IM, who won third prize. Robin Haldane won the U195 grading prize, getting an impressive 4/6.
In the Major, draws were costing the top players money. The top three players all finished the day undefeated but two of those, Jinwoo Song and Christopher Clegg, got three draws and so finished half a point behind the winner Hamza Syed who only conceded two draws to those two players. The U140 Grading prize was won by Richmond Junior James Snowden.
The Intermediate saw several excellent performances from Richmond Juniors - the most notable being from fast-improving Khalid Kamara who won the section on 5.5/6. Eliot Hoving, a junior on holidays from Australia, and David McNish came joint second on 5/6. Fourth prizes were also given to Kevin Lenaghan, and Saravanan Sathyanandha on 4.5/6. Richmond Junior Ben Wetherfield also got this on 4.5/6 but also won the U100 grading prize to cap a superb performance for him.
The only 100% score of the day came in the Minor when Sussex Junior Tristan Blundell won all of his games to earn himself a well deserved first place. Equal second were three people, two of who are Richmond Juniors and the other a parent of a Richmond Junior playing his first tournament in over 20 years! Deepa Patel, Josh Wolrich and Barnaby Marder, father of Daniel, all finished on 5/6. Harvey Murray-Smith got 5th prize on 4.5/6. Grading prizes for U60 and Ungraded were also given out but because there were 11 people all tied for this, it was decided that since the prize would be so small were it shared between all those people, that it would be done on progressive score. This meant the players who had the longest winning streak from the start of the tournament would win. In the U60 grading band that was shared by Richmond Juniors and brothers James Kerr and David Kerr, and the Ungraded players were Thanurshan Mahenthran and Richmond Junior Alasdair Marshall.
The next Richmond Rapidplay is on September 26th, where our new season starts with more prize money from the Richmond Grand Prix, where you can win cash prizes for best performances relative to your grade over the season. Details of the grand prix, and an online entry form for the rapidplay can both be found on www.rjcc.org.uk. Thanks to the RJCC for sending news.
