The games have been compiled from a number of sources. They represent a round-up of games played since the beginning of October until the end of November, plus a number of others from earlier in the year which have only recently come to light. My thanks to all games inputters involved, and websites which have made games available. John Saunders

OBITUARIES - Sadly we have just heard that the Leicester player Alfred Lenton has died. He was 92. Alf Lenton's name is unlikely to be familiar to many, but he was a notable player immediately before WW2, playing in the first three Anglo-Dutch internationals and the last four pre-war British Championship tournaments. He made his debut in the British Championship in Great Yarmouth in 1935, when he finished 3rd= (with Golombek, Michell and Tylor) behind Winter and Sir George Thomas. In 1936 he improved to 2nd= with Ritson Morry, once again behind Winter. Had he taken a good chance to beat Winter he might have won the championship that year. In 1937 Lenton did less well in the British Championship but nevertheless claimed the scalps of two distinguished former champions, H. E. Atkins and Sir George Thomas. Earlier that year he had played eight in the inaugural Anglo-Dutch match in Flushing, scoring a draw and a loss from two games. He played on board ten of the 1938 Anglo-Dutch match, winning his match 1½-½. In the British Championship of that year he was once again down the order, but managed to beat Frank Parr in only nine moves. He played in the 1939 Anglo-Dutch in The Hague but this time went down ½-1½. He did not play in any post-war British Championship and seems to have dropped out of high-level chess, perhaps devoting himself to his second-hand book business in Leicester. However he beat Czech IM Tibor Florian in the Midlands versus Czechoslovakia match of 1947, and won the Leicestershire championship nine times. He reappeared briefly in 1961 in a short international tournament held to celebrate the centenary of the Leicestershire club. He carried on with club chess into his extreme old age, and last appeared in a grading list as late as 2003, playing for the Thurnby club and showing an (unconfirmed) date of birth of 1 November 1911.

Former BCCA champion and Yorkshire Post chess columnist Stanley Wilkinson has died aged 79. He wrote the chess column for more than 20 years and was a feature writer for the paper and later for other newspapers in the area. The Yorkshire Post has a very full obituary - www.ypn.co.uk

Monarch Assurance and World Senior Championship events. Both of these were held at the Ocean Castle Hotel in Port Erin, and live coverage was provided at websites run by BCM. Full results and coverage will remain only for some months to come - links: www.bcmchess.co.uk/monarch2004/index.html and www.bcmchess.co.uk/worldseniorteam2004/index.html - games were input by me (John Saunders) and Andrew Smith.

4NCL - Divisions One and Two have completed four rounds while Divisions Three and Four have completed two. The biggest talking point of the season so far was the inclusion of Alexei Shirov and seven top women players in Wood Green 1's squad at the November weekend. This was something of a publicity stunt but was also successful in that the team won both its matches to put Wood Green 1 into the lead going into the new year. But they only lead champions Guildford-ADC 1 by a half game point so there is everything to play for. Division Two, round three, saw a big clash between Hilsmark Kingfisher and Slough Sharks, with two top boards both rated over 2600 and six grandmasters taking part. It ended 4-4. The download includes all 4NCL games played so far this season. Thanks to Arthur Brameld, Malcolm Armstrong, Robert Parker and others involved in getting the games keyed in.

Smith & Williamson British Championships, August 2004
One thing we didn't mention in the last round-up was that Gawain Jones won the 2004 British Under 21 Championship. The English 16-year-old won with an excellent score of 6½/11. In the process he chalked up his third and final IM norm, becoming one of the youngest Britons to qualify for the IM title (it was duly ratified at the FIDE Congress). Back in July Gawain finished 1st= in the Irish Open Championship, although he was not eligible to take the title. He is a remarkable young talent. Visit Gawain's website at www.gawainjones.com

Guernsey 2004, 3-9 September 2004
Many thanks to Kevin Thurlow for the detailed report that follows, and to Arthur Brameld for supplying the games of the Open and Holiday tournaments. Full crosstables of the Open and Holiday events may be found below.

The 30th Guernsey International Chess Festival started two weeks earlier than usual, as FIDE decided to arrange the Olympiad to clash with the normal dates. Guernsey is a separate federation, which still seems to puzzle some visitors from the UK. "It isn't BCF graded", they complain. When you ask if they would expect events in Russia or France or Outer Mongolia to be BCF graded, they still look puzzled. Anyway, 80 players turned up for the latest event, somewhat fewer than usual. The inevitable change in dates was partially responsible, as there was overlap with the Isle of Man tournament (which is covered by BCF), and the new dates did not clash with the English half-term holidays. This caused the rather unusual effect of a complete absence of juniors. This may have concerned the organisers but it has to be said several of the players were rather pleased. Another factor was the absence of direct flights from the Netherlands, causing a distinct lack of Dutch players. The organisers actually tried to arrange charter flights, but the airline which "owns" the route declined to arrange flights from Amsterdam-Guernsey and also refused to let anyone else run flights on the same route. It is somehow comforting when so many bizarre decisions are made by chess (and football, cricket etc) bodies to see that the real world is just the same.

The reduced entry meant the players had plenty of room, so playing conditions were excellent. GM Tiger Hillarp Persson (Sweden) was clear favourite, followed by IM Robert Bellin (England). There were three FMs, Tony Corkett (England), Gunther Ballon (Netherlands) and Ran Shabtai (Israel). Ballon seemed to be suffering from a cold and did not really challenge the leaders, whilst Shabtai had a slow start. There was no great surprise that Tiger and Robert reached 4/4 and therefore met in round five. This was a quick draw, as Tiger felt he had misplayed the opening. He suffered the same fate next round, whilst Robert beat Tony. Both players won the last round, so Robert won with 6½/7, and Tiger was second with 6, Tony Corkett, Jan Havenaar, Ran Shabtai and Gavin Lock were joint third with 5. By a curious coincidence your reporter played the first three of the third-placed players, then played Gavin two days later in a Surrey league match. Robert was especially pleased with his win as he had been appointed Guernsey coach/captain for the Olympiad and felt it proved he could still play! There are many years when 6/7 would give clear first place. Eight federations were represented in the Open.

The Guernsey Holiday tournament (for players rated under 1760 or BCF 145) was won by Paul Carlucci on 6/7, with Russell Finch (Guernsey) second on 5½, both unbeaten. I am sure this is the highest a Channel Islands player has finished in the event.

The entire tournament was played in a very sporting spirit, and Steve Boniface (Arbiter for the Open) and Ray Ryan (Controller of Holiday event) had few problems. They did a great job running the tournament. As always, the "Cock and Bull" pub in town arranged its beer festival for the chess week, and a special trip was arranged for interested players. There was a Ten Pin bowling competition one evening as well. The closing dinner was attended by John and Peggy Bisson (who started the tournament and ran it for many years) as special guests. Eric Croker also attended. He acted as arbiter for some years, and was enjoying a holiday! Peter Rowe and his colleagues from Guernsey were running the tournament this year, and did a great job. Marc Jongerius put the results and pairings on his website every day, which helped publicise the event. Channel TV covered some of the last round.

This may be the last tournament at the Peninsula Hotel, as the owners want to turn it into an old people's home. It could be argued that they partially succeeded in the week of the tournament. Planning authorities might scupper the plans, so we may well be sitting down in the Peninsula next year. Thanks are due to the retiring manager Mr Becker and his wife and all the staff for making us so welcome over the years.

Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed the destination of the brilliancy prize, so I suppose I should provide an annotated copy [the game is included in the download with Kevin's notes - ed]

41st Hull (HDCA) Chess Congress, Quality Royal Hotel, 5-7 November, 2004.
John Lawson reports: This new venue was excellent, though there were some reservations regarding the facilities in the Minor Tournament room. In fact, the Organisers are intending to run the Congress in future years with all sections being in the same room. This may mean limiting the entry to around 115. It seems wrong that the Minor players have to be cut off from the main body of the Congress.
The very poor support for the Open and Major tournaments over the last few years has also been a problem for the Organisers. Consideration is therefore being given to amalgamating these two tournaments, but maintaining a prize structure which will encourage support for the venture.
Not surprisingly, the Open went to Craig Hanley who is a FIDE Master and Richard Britton, also an FM, was joint runner up with top Hull player John Cooper. They were the top three graded players in the event. Richard Britton took the HDCA Championship by being the highest placed Player from a local club. John Jackson, the Hull Chess Club player was the only player in the Congress to score 5/5 to win the Intermediate Tournament.
Main prize winners: 1 Craig Hanley (NW Eagles, 214) 4½/5, 2 Richard Britton (Hull, 198) 3½. Grading Prizes: HDCA Champion John Cooper (Hull,185) 3½.

John Lawson Intermediate (48 Players): 1 John Jackson (Hull, 114) 5/5, 2-4 MJ Cawston (York R.I., 125), Mark Bettley (St Andrews, 112), Steve Webster (York, 111) 4.

The honours in the younger Challengers' event went to Duke Quinton of Caterham Prep, who pipped Michael McMillan (Essendene Lodge) and Jason Ying (St Peter's Primary) on progressive score; all of them scoring 4 points. 23rd Bolton Rapidplay, 21 November 2004
Rod Middleton reports:
86 competitors attended this event, held at the Bolton Excel Centre.
In the Major championships Bob Newton was the early leader and the only player on 4/4 points. After a 5th round win against Mark Taylor he had won the event with one round to spare with the chasing pack all on 3½ points. A final round victory against Harry Lamb (Bolton) ensured maximum points for Bob.
In the Knights section, Vic Rushworth of Stockport was the only player to reach 4/4 points. The key game occurred in round 5 with Vic playing black against Mark Stolley on 3.5pts. Mark won to take the lead, which he maintained with a final round victory.
Major Championship (under 161): 1 R A Newton (Morecambe/Heywood) 6/6; 2-4 M Taylor (Rochdale), R Howley (Bury), D Rabbitte (Swinton) 4½. Grading prize (U140) C Jardine (Great Lever) 4. 31 competitors, £230 prize fund
Knights (U120): 1 M Stollery (Nelson) 5½/6, 2-3 M Wood (Pensby), M Rabbitte (Swinton) 5. Grading prize (U100): T Sullivan (Rawtenstall) 4½/6. 55 competitors, £230 prize fund.

32nd English Deaf Chess Association Congress, Romford, 30th-31st October 2004.
Alasdair MacLeod, Secretary, English Deaf Chess Association, reports: Premier (10 players, 5 rounds): 1 Alasdair MacLeod (127, London) 4/5 (£60), 2 Phillip Gardner (157, Letchworth) 3½ (on tie-break, £30), 3 Chris Kreuzer (141, Teddington) 3½, 4 Lewis Martin (117, Swindon) 3½.
Major (7 players, all-play-all): 1 Chris Williamson (Birmingham) 5/6 (on tie-break, £40), 2 John Brown (Kent) 5/6 (£20). The most eye-catching performance came from 13-year-old Lewis Martin making his debut in the Premier. He was unfazed by the occasion and as the no.8 seed beat the no.2 and 3 seeds. Lewis only lost one game - to the no.1 seed, Phillip Gardner. Clearly an exciting new talent both as a junior - one of the best in the country for his age and in deaf chess.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Hastings Chess Congress
Stewart Reuben reports on the forthcoming Hastings International Congress (note the correction to the time limit shown on the printed entry forms - ed): Entries so far include: Barsov, Cherniaev, Efimenko, C. Flear, Kiriakov, Hebden, Kotronias, B. Lalic, McNab, Mirzoeva, Pavlovic, N. Pert, B. Socko, M. Socko, S. Williams,
The Hastings Chess Congress takes place 28 December 2004 to 9 January 2005 and has a new format. The Hastings Premier and Challengers are combined into one knockout tournament. Let us imagine 120 players enter for the event which finishes 6 January. Then 60 players go forward from the first round, with 4 lucky losers. These 64 players play a second round of knockout. The 56 losers play in the Challengers Swiss. The 64 players continue in one game knockouts until there are eight players left. These eight play in the Premier of two-game knockouts. All players knocked out will be contracted to play in the Swiss Challengers, except for the losing finalist.
Players, when knocked out, will carry forward their score in the standard-play games. Of course having White would have been a big advantage. There was an error earlier. The games will be played with White having 70 minutes and Black 90 in which to make the first 40 moves. Then each player will receive an extra 20 minutes for all the moves. There will be an addition of one minute per move cumulatively from the first.
Where games are drawn, ties will be resolved first by blitz games, failing that an Armageddon play-off. Players will be able to gain title results from either event. The event will be part of the Association of Chess Professionals Grand Prix and the BCF Grand Prix.
The weekend tournament takes place 7-9 January.
Full details from Con Power conpowr@aol.com Players seeking conditions should contact Stewartreuben@aol.com website http://www.hastingschess.org.uk where there is very full explanation of the logistics of the system.
