The games have been compiled from a number of sources. They represent a round-up of games played mainly since the beginning of December until the end of January, plus a number of others from earlier in the year which have only recently come to light. My thanks to all games inputters involved, and websites which have made games available. Seven games from Gibraltar amended 14/02/2005. John Saunders

Headlines... Vladimir Belov won the new-look Hastings knock-out tournament... Five-Way Tie at Gibraltar... Alexei Barsov, Valery Neverov and Monika Socko shared 1st in the Hastings Challengers... Wood Green 1 and Guildford-ADC 1 remain neck and neck in the 4NCL... Danny Gormally has achieved his final GM norm at Gibraltar...

80th Hastings International Congress, 28 December - 9 January.
The traditional congress has been given a radical make-over, with the old-style Premier and Challengers combined into one to make a big knock-out tournament ending in a two-game final on 5-6 January. One controversial new departure was a time limit designed to make up for the fact that the player drawing Black in any round is at a disadvantage. The rate of play is 40 moves in the first 70 minutes for White and 90 minutes for Black, plus 20 minutes for all the remaining moves, adding on one minute per move from the first. The time limit applies throughout all rounds in both tournaments; our understanding is that it is no bar to games being FIDE-rated or norms being achievable (though perhaps it should be).
Final: 21-year-old Russian grandmaster Vladimir Belov closed out his two-game match with Bartosz Socko with a draw to become the first winner of the new Hastings Knock-Out tournament. Though this year's field was not as impressive as in past years, and the format was somewhat controversial, there is no question that the most deserving player came through to win. Hastings has been a notable showcase for emerging talents for more than 100 years, from Pillsbury to Ponomariov, and it is just possible that Vladimir Belov is another such case. Challengers: 1-3 Monika Socko (POL), Alexei Barsov (UZB), Valery Neverov (UKR) 7½/10, 4-9 N Pert (ENG), J Gonzales (PHI), Z Efimenko (UKR), W Hendriks (NED), D Gormally (ENG) 7, etc.

4NCL - There have been two separate weekends of 4NCL chess played in January. Divisions 1 and 2 travelled to Nottingham for the first time on 22/23 January. The change of venue made no difference to the leader board. Wood Green 1 reverted to conventional practice by fielding seven men and one woman (rather than the other way round), but managed to win anyway (only kidding, guys). Guildford-ADC 1 also won both of their matches, though the game points swung marginally in favour of the London club. Things are still very tight in the relegation zone. In Division Two, Barbican 2's 100% was finally ended when Slough Sharks downed them. Hilsmark Kingfisher had two more big wins. The Sharks and Kingfishers seem dead certs for promotion, and Barbican 2 are best placed to join them in the top division. After four rounds played, Guildford-ADC 3 lead Division with a 100% score, with Oxford 1 and South Wales Dragons 2 two points behind. Cambridge University could not beat Wessex 2 despite a healthy rating plus, but won an unofficial Varsity match against Oxford 1 on the Sunday. Thanks to Arthur Brameld, Malcolm Armstrong, Robert Parker and others involved in getting the games keyed in, and Peter Sowray for his highly efficient webmastery at 4NCL.co.uk

Gibraltar: Gibtelecom Masters, 25 Jan - 3 Feb 2005. The Gibtelecom Chess Festival took place at the Caleta Hotel, Gibraltar. It featured several tournaments, in particular the Gibtelecom Masters, a ten-round swiss with an impressive line-up of grandmasters - Alexei Shirov, Alexei Dreev, Lev Aronian, Emil Sutovsky, Krishnan Sasikiran, Kiril Georgiev and the new US champion Hikaru Nakamura. In the end, five players shared for first place - 1-5 Aronian, Efimenko, Georgiev, Shirov, Sutovsky 7½/10, 6-10 Areshchenko, Gormally, Kotronias, Nakamura, Sargissian 7, etc. Danny Gormally had a superb tournament: he achieved his GM title, and overcame his fear of flying. As with the famous Arsenal and Netherlands soccer player Dennis Bergkamp, Danny's international appearances have been restricted by his fear of taking to the skies. He recently took a fear of flying course and came through it with flying colours (no apologies for the pun). After the adrenalin rush of the flight to Gibraltar, getting his final GM norm must have been a piece of cake. There were also IM norms for Thomas Rendle, Gary Quillan, Hamad Al-Tamimi and Saleh Jasim - congratulations to them.

South Wales Premier League: Six clubs from South Wales are competing in the new South Wales Premier League, with five-board matches being played between Cardigan, Cardiff, Nidum, Caerphilly, Monmouth and White Knights. Two rounds have been completed so far, and the teams are currently in the order shown above. Cardigan enjoy the services of the former (many times) Welsh champion Howard Williams on board one, Professor Dafydd Johnston on board two and Olympiad veteran Iolo Jones on board three. The top two found young Welsh stars Leighton Williams and Richard Jones a bit hot for them in their match with Nidum, but the bottom three boards won the match for Cardigan. There are 35 games in the download. My thanks to Mark Adams. Website: http://www.welshchessunion.co.uk/html/sw_pl.html

Royal Beacon Seniors, 15-19 November 2004. This annual seniors-only event was held at the Royal Beacon Hotel in Exmouth. Actually there were two tournaments: one for seniors (60 and over) and another for 'Juniors' (aged 50 and over). This redefinition of the word 'junior' is a great psychological fillip for those of us who have chalked up their 'two score and ten' - I think I detect the sense of humour of one S. Boniface, esq. I am indebted to William Frost for sending me complete databases of both tournaments.
Results - Seniors: 1-3 John Gorodi (Teignmouth, 142), A Milnes (Maidenhead, 165), G Stokes (Solihull, 145), C Williams (Rotherham, 171) 4. U100 GP: R Ryan (Seaton, 92) 3½. U90 GP H Herschmann (Hampstead, 87), M Kaye (Dorchester, 80) 3. "Junior": 1 Alan Barton (Hastings, 177) 5/5, 2-3 Ian Heppell (Wimbledon, 174), P Patience (Southampton, 155) 3½. U140 GP: D Norman (Crowthorne, 138), J Shaddick (Basingstoke, 119) 2½.

17th Preston Congress, 26-28 November. This was a five round swiss divided into four sections, held at the Lancashire County Council Offices. Thanks to Dave Clayton and Steve Hughes, the top eight boards of the open were broadcast live on the internet. All 40 games may be found in the download. The open was won in fine style by Lawrence Trent.
Open: 1 Lawrence Trent (Ilford) 5/5, 2 Brett Lund (Preston) 4. 3-6 Craig Hanley (Lancaster), Alan Smith (Chedderton and Leak), David Hulmes (Stockport), James Hanley (Lancaster) 3½.

The Devon Inter-Area Jamboree this year was organised by the West and held at Babbage House, Plymouth University on 23rd January 2005. The home side won, followed by the South and the East. There are 18 games on the database thanks to Tony Tatam and the Keverel website. On 8 January 2005 Devon met Wiltshire at Cheddon Fitzpaine and came out easy winners with 12½ points to 3½. There are 11 games on the database.

Bury Rapidplay, 12 December 2004.
Mick Norris reports: The 10th annual Rapidplay Congress organised by Bury Chess Club took place at the sumptuous surroundings of the Elizabethan Suite, Bury Town Hall. Nearly a hundred players contested three Sections with total prize money of £760.

Michael Wood Homes were main sponsors of the Bury Rapidplay Chess Congress. Returning sponsors of the congress this year were Scottish Life and Metcalfe & Co Accountants of Bury and Skandia Life.

Bury's Paul Mole won the Lodwig Gruchlik Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually for the best score from a Bury Chess Club full member, with a score of 5½/6 in winning the Minor. Paul achieved the best score by any player on the day.

Also in the Minor, Lee Baron scored lost his first game, but won the rest to finish joint second. Martin Bryant only dropped points in a loss to Paul, and a stalemate in time trouble to finish with 4.5. Peter Logan and Stephen Press scored 3.5, Roger Nuttall and Sheraz Khalil 3, Brian Forrest 2.5 and Michael Law 1.5.

In the Major, the three masters of time-trouble, Roger Howley, Anthony Lee and Keith Evans all scored 3½.

Although there were no female players this year, we were visited on the day by no less than 3 expectant wives of club members. We hope that the next generation of Bury players will arrive safely over the next 6 months.

The M W Homes Open: As has become customary, this was another strong event with 5 titled players including two IMs among the 17 players, five of which were graded over 200. Andrew Ledger (Sheffield) and Craig Hanley (Lancaster) won £120 each with a score of 5/6. 2002 winner Craig Hanley lost the war of the roses to Andrew in the crucial game in round four. Andrew then drew with the Bolton pair of Mike Surtees and Jeff Horner. Mike finished third with 4½ and won the under 190 grading prize. Jeff finished fourth with 4. Roger Williamson (Aigburth) won the under 170 grading prize.

Major: there were two undefeated joint winners also with a score of 5/6 - Ian Campbell (Widnes) and Adam Scoular (Swinton). Adam drew in rounds one and three, so never got the chance to play Ian who drew in rounds four and six. Dean Hartley (Clay Cross) won the under 135 grading prize with 4½. Dean finished joint third with Martin Burns (Stockport). Michael Rabbitte (Swinton) won the under 120 grading prize.

Minor: Paul Mole of Bury won the Minor with the day's best score of 5½/6, conceding a draw in the second round. James Carrington (Tameside Juniors) finished joint second on 5, with Lee Baron of Bury. Conrad Jowett (Stockport) was surprised to win the under 85 grading prize despite his last round defeat by Lee. Terry Sullivan (Calderdale) produced the day's best rating performance, finishing joint second with James and Lee and winning the under 70 grading prize. Next year's event on Sunday 11 December 2005.

Civil Service Centenary Congress, London, 13-14 November 2004. We reported this last time but this time we have all the games. My thanks to Ian Pheby for supplying them.

23rd Bolton Rapidplay 21 November 2004.
Rod Middleton reports: 86 competitors attended the 23rd Bolton Rapidplay, held at the Bolton Excel Centre. In the Major championships Bob Newton was the early leader and the only player on 4/4 points. After a 5th round win against Mark Taylor he had won the event with one round to spare with the chasing pack all on 3½ points. A final round victory against Harry Lamb (Bolton) ensured maximum points for Bob. In the Knights section, Vic Rushworth of Stockport was the only player to reach 4/4 points. The key game occurred in round five with Vic playing black against Mark Stolley on 3½. Mark won to take the lead, which he maintained with a final round victory.
Major Championship U161: 1 RA Newton (Morecambe /Heywood) 6/6, 2-4 M Taylor (Rochdale), R Howley (Bury), D Rabbitte (Swinton) 4½. Grading prize U140: C Jardine (Great Lever) 4. 31 competitors, £230 prize fund
Knights U120: 1 M Stollery (Nelson) 5½/6, 2-3 M Wood (Pensby), M Rabbitte (Swinton) 5. Grading prize U100: T Sullivan (Rawtenstall) 4½. 55 competitors, £230 prize fund

Coulsdon Rapidplay, 4 December 2004. Scott Freeman reports: The latest Coulsdon Open Rapidplay had 43 players who all played in one large section over six rounds. Honours went to IM Colin Crouch and Coulsdon's Ian Snape, both of whom scored 5/6. They drew with each other in round four before missing a good chance of an outright win by being held by theoretically weaker players themselves in round five.
Four players tied for 3rd. They included Chris Clegg of Kingston, East Grinstead junior Joe Fraser, Rasa Norinkeviciute and Richard Almond. They all scored 4½, just half a point ahead of seven players including Coulsdon's Paul Jackson, who after a disappointing draw in the first round, reeled off 3 straight wins and then a draw against the much stronger Jovica Radovanovic to throw himself into the running. Sadly, he lost the final match to Ian Snape and missed out on prizes altogether. The prize fund was awarded as follows:
1-2 Colin Crouch (Pinner), Ian Snape (Coulsdon) 5/6 (£40 each), U210 Ian Snape (Coulsdon) 5 (£30), U180 Richard Almond (Hastings) 4½ (£7-50), Chris Clegg (Kingston), Joe Fraser (East Grinstead), Rasa Norinkeviciute (Eastbourne) 4½ (£7-50 each), U150 Chris Clegg (Kingston), Joe Fraser (East Grinstead), Rasa Norinkeviciute (Eastbourne) 4½ (£10), U125 Peter Wilson (Guernsey), Joe Xuereb (Coulsdon) 3½ (£15 each), U100 Howard Curtis (Coulsdon), Mehdi Khatib (London NW1), David Wallis (Worthing), Joe Xuereb (Coulsdon) 3½ (£15 each), U75 Chris Constable (Coulsdon), Luke Shakerchi (Ashtead) 2 (£15 each).

Coulsdon Christmas Congress, 18-19 December 2004. Scott Freeman reports: a total of 97 players competed over five rounds in five sections. FM Martin Taylor and Coulsdon's Andrew Bigg jointly won with 4 out of 5. Half a point behind them were Ian Snape and Peter Poobalasingham. The prize winners were:
Open: 1-2 Andrew Bigg (Coulsdon), Martin Taylor (Rainham) 4/5 (£90 each), 3-4 Peter Poobalasingham (Richmond Jun), Ian Snape (Coulsdon) 3½ (£15 each).

U145: 1 Jinwoo Song (Kingston) 4½/5 (£120), 2-8 Paul Barkshire Coulsdon, Richard Edwards (London SW11), Livu Enciu (London SE8), Paul Jackson Coulsdon, Roderick Johnson Brentwood, Jonathan Rubeck Hendon, Yang-Fan Zhou (Wimbledon) 3½ (£13 each).
U120: 1-3 Tristan Clayton Sidney (Suss), James Foster (Coulsdon), James Harrington (Hendon) 4/5 (£70).
U90: 1 Gary Bennett (Copthorne) 4½/5 (£120), 2-4 Samuel Franklin (Dulwich College), Dinesh Jain (Pinner), Jyoti Parmar (W Nottingham) 4 (£30).
This was the 2nd round of the Coulsdon Long Play Grand Prix. The final round will be played over the Easter holidays.

Coulsdon Chess Club: Coulsdon Blitz, 15 Jan 2005 - it was a busy day at CCF with 9 people starting the Arbiter's course whilst a further 25 people battled in the traditional January 12-round open blitz tournament. It was a superb tournament with dog eating dog all day. The computer program certainly proved its worth as we finished over an hour earlier than we would normally have finished had we been going through the stresses and strains of manual pairings. The eventual winner was Paul Georghiou, who overcame a first round loss to fellow late arrival and eventual 2nd placed player, John Cox, to come through winning 10 and drawing one of his 11 remaining games to win the £45 first prize. David Howell came in 3rd after suffering shock losses in rounds 2 and 4. He drew with the eventual winner in round 9 and finished on 9½.
The Under 145 grading prize went to Robin Huq of Battersea Chess Club, who scored 7 out of 12. The under 120 award went to Kevin Lenaghan of Metropolitan whilst the Under 80 award to Coulsdon's Chris Constable, both scoring 6 points despite Chris having to play the last round on top board against Paul Georghiou.
1 Paul Georghiou (Barnet) 10½/12 (£45), U145 Robin Huq (Battersea) 7 (£25), U120 Kevin Lenaghan (Metropolitan) 6 (£25), U80 Chris Constable (Coulsdon) 6 (£25). Thanks to Scott Freeman.
