European Team Championship, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, 11-20 October 2003

Last Edited: Tuesday October 21, 2003 0:03 AM

The European Team Championship is being held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from 11-20 October 2003 (nine rounds - 16 Oct is a free day). There are 37 men's/open teams (four boards from five player squads) and 30 women's teams (two boards from three player squads). Rankings are based on match points (won match = 2, drawn match = 1), with total board points being used as the first tie-break. Time limit is 90 minutes per player per game, with 30 seconds added after each move from the beginning of the game. The favourites for gold are Russia, and there are also very strong teams from Israel, Spain, Ukraine and France. England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are fielding teams in the men's/open, and England also have a team in the women's event. England have a much weakened team and are only seeded 23rd. The other teams from the British Isles are also somewhat under strength: Scotland are seeded 32nd, Ireland 35th and Wales 37th. England's women's team is close to full strength, though lacking a reserve player, and seeded 11th.

England team: 1 Jon Speelman 2575g (5/9), 2 Bogdan Lalic 2503g (5/9), 3 Glenn Flear (captain) 2516g (4/9), 4 Peter Wells 2485g (1/3), 5 Jon Levitt 2423g (4/6).

Round 9 (Monday 20 October)

Russia won the gold medals again. Well done to them and their genial, cricket-loving board one. Four draws ended a middling sort of tournament for the under-strength England side. The first and last all-Celtic encounter ended in a near-wipeout for luckless Wales, though they scored their first half point since round six. Team member John Trevelyan summed up the experience with his usual coal-black humour: "I'm feeling much better today. My team mates have given me back my belt and shoelaces, and later on today I'll get the key to my 7th floor balcony." Don't do it, John, your country needs you. Ireland showed the way to deal with the imbalanced Cyprus team. Lastly, top marks to the Bulgarian website for a top-notch job done.

Final Positions: 1 Russia 17(22½); 2 Israel 15(22½); 3 Georgia 13(22); 4 Slovenia 13(20½)... 17 England 9(19)... 30 Scotland 7(16)... 32 Ireland 7(15½)... 37 Wales 2(7½). Note, none of the British teams finished below their seeded position. Yes, I should have been a spin doctor, shouldn't I?

Women's Round 9

England completed the complete men's and women's truce with Serbia, though this was a hard fought match unlike the men's equivalent. The game score of Maric-Hunt is completely wrong. Russia were pipped at the post by Armenia and Hungary.

Final Positions: 1 Armenia 14(13); 2 Hungary 14(12½); 3 Russia 13(12½); 4 Poland 12(10½)... 10 England 11(9½).

Round 8 (Sunday 19 October)

Adequate result for England, near misses for Scotland and Ireland. Wales must be longing for the end of the tournament. They already have the wooden spoon.

Women's Round 8

After elation, disappointment, as the England women's team fall back to earth. The Russians also lost, to Hungary, so the destination of the gold medals is still uncertain.

Standings: 1 Russia 12(11½); 2 Armenia 12(11½); 3 Hungary 12(10½); 4 Poland 12(10); 5 Lithuania 11(9); 6 Ukraine 10(10½); 7 Georgia 10(10); 8 Serbia 10(9½); 9 Romania 10(9½); 10 England 10(8½).

An excellent round for the English women, particularly Harriet Hunt's win against the European women's champion.

Round 6 (Friday 17 October)

Mixed fortunes after the rest day. England might have expected a bit more against Luxembourg but at least that's two match points in the bag. Scotland must have fancied two points as well but didn't quite manage them. Wales will be cheesed off with their hammering by Turkey; Tim Kett lost his first game but at least Alan Spice got off the mark. But Ireland must be pleased with a very decent point against a strong Bulgarian B team. I wonder if you can get a decent pint of Guinness in Plovdiv? Round 7 pairings: England v FYROM, Ireland v Estonia, Scotland v Austria, Wales v Cyprus.

Standings: 1 Russia 12(15½); 2 Israel 10(15); 3 France 9(15); 4 Georgia 9(15); 5 Poland 9(15)... 19 England 6(13½)... 31 Ireland 4(9)... 35 Scotland 3(8½)... 37 Wales 2(7).

Women's Round 6

A bit more like it from England, against a team of similar strength. Jovanka Houska is now on +2 and has the best score of all the British players. Round 7 pairings: England v France.

Standings: 1 Russia 10(9); 2 Poland 10(8½); 3 Ukraine 9(9); 4 Armenia 9(8½)... 9 England 8(6½).

Round 5 (Wednesday 15 October)

Another bad day for the Brits. Only Scotland scored match points - by virtue of having the bye. And those minimal 1½-2½ losses must have been painful. That said, Wales did extremely well to run Iceland so close, being outrated by about 200 points a board. Tim Kett continues to excel, with a performance of around 2519 for four games. Sadly, because Wales had a bye in round one, he cannot hope to qualify for an IM norm as he will be one game short even if he plays all the remaining rounds.

Standings: 1 Russia 10(13); 2 Azerbaijan 9(13); 3 France 8(13); 4 Israel 8(12½)... 25 England 4(11)... 32 Ireland 3(7)... 34 Scotland 2(6½), 35 Wales 2(6½).

A wipeout against Russia for Harriet and Jovanka.

Standings: 1 Russia 9(8); 2 Armenia 8(7½); 3 Poland 8(7); 4 Bulgaria-A 8(6½)... 13 England 6(5).

Round 4 (Tuesday 14 October)

A big win for England against one of the minnows. A decent effort by Wales, for whom Tim Kett is the star player. An evenly contested match between Ireland and Luxembourg ended in a draw. Scotland were totally outgunned by Bosnia. The surprise of the day was Ukraine being held 2-2 by Italy.

Standings: 1 Israel 8(11); 2 Russia 8(10½); 3 Azerbaijan 7(10½)... 18 England 4(9½)... 28 Ireland 3(6½)... 34 Wales 2(5)... 37 Scotland 0(4½).

Not a bad effort against the no.2 seeds.

Standings: 1 Armenia 7(6½); 2 Russia 7(6); 3 Bulgaria-A 7(5½)... 8 England 6(5).

Round 3 (Monday 13 October)

Rather a dismal day for the British men's teams. Not a win in sight. Tim Kett is doing a good holding job for Wales. Not all the men's games are available in the download.

Standings: 1 Serbia 6(9); 2 Israel 6(8); 3 Russia 6(7½)... 22 England 2(6)... 29 Ireland 2(4½)... 32 Wales 2(3½)... 35 Scotland 0(4).

Round 3 - Women - another good day for England's women. Georgia lost to Bulgaria A (Stefanova beat Khurtsidze).

Standings: 1 Russia 6(5); 2 Bulgaria A 6(4½); 3 Ukraine 5(5); 4 Armenia 5(4½); 5 England 5(4).

3.6 9 Hungary   ½ - 1½ 11 England

Round 2 (Sunday 12 October)

Standings: 1-3 Serbia, Slovenia, Israel 4/4 (5½); 4-5 Russia, Germany 4 (5)... 21 England 2(4½)... 27 Wales 2 (3)... 30 Scotland 0 (2½)... 31 Ireland 0 (2½).

England's men's and women's top boards, Jon Speelman and Harriet Hunt, have started with 1½/2 but no other British player has yet managed a better than even score. The European Team Championship is traditionally a much tougher event than the Olympiad as there are less small countries represented.

Round 1 (Saturday 11 October)

The major event of the first round came when FIDE world champion Ruslan Ponomariov's mobile phone rang and thus cost him the game (under a by-law of the event). In fact he was in a losing position anyway. All chess players should take note and beware the enemy in their pocket...
