Kortchnoi leads at Super-GM in Paks
20.06.2005 He is fifty years older than the average of the other participants, and older that than almost any three opponents you pick from the field. But Viktor Kortchnoi is the driving force at the Super-GM tournament in Paks, Hungary. With 5˝/7 points he is poised to chalk up another great victory.

Third Marx György tournament in Paks

The 3rd Marx György tournament is taking place in Paks, Hungary. It is in commemoration of György Marx, professor of physics and is designed to give the most talented young local grandmasters the opportunity to acquire experience. The main patron of the tournament is József Kovács, the director-general of Nuclear Power Plant Ltd. Paks.

The amazing Viktor Kortchnoi in action

The hero of the event is 74-year-old Viktor Kortchnoi, who is outplaying his young and super-strong opponents as if they were students of his master-class. Not springing novelties on them, or whipping them with flashy tactics, but by grinding them down, slowly pushing them off the board with superior chess understanding. We can envision someone like 24-year-old Peter Acs making a mental note: "Never allow a rook ending against this man – he wins them all."
