Chess for Peace
Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is to visit Lindsborg to start
the Chess for Peace campaign. This includes a series of Internet matches throughout
the world, with the winners invited to Lindsborg in June 2006 for a weeklong
festival.

To honor Gorbachev Lindsborg will have a chess parade, a scholastic chess
tournament and a match between former world champion Anatoly Karpov and former
women's world champion Susan Polgar. There will also be a formal dinner and
keynote address by Gorbachev at Bethany College.

Gorbachev is Lindsborg's most prominent visitor since 1976, when King Carl
XVI Gustaf of Sweden visited the predominantly Swedish community of just over
3,000 people.

The yearlong Chess for Peace initiative will commence on October 29, and will
be followed by a series of Internet matches between students from countries
throughout the world. The winners of these matches will be invited to participate
in the week long Chess for Peace Festival, which will be held in Lindsborg
in June 2006. Students will play chess and share their respective cultures
with other participants.
