Regarding the audio question from the listener who wished to organize his Applications:

This sounds like a job for a long-time Mac resident, the humble alias. The listener even mentioned this possibility.

You could simply create a folder called something like "SortedApps" anywhere in your Home folder, which could contain all the subfolders you wish. Then option+command drag the apps from the Applications folder into those subfolders to create aliases of them.

You could even then drag that folder full of Application aliases into the Dock and launch them quickly from there.

Now your actual Applications are still in the standard location, but you can arrange the aliases as you like, and nothing breaks.

These days, though, I mostly use Spotlight to launch Apps that are not in my Dock.

The suggestion above about using alias is good. Essentially you are duplicating the way the Start Menu works under Windows. Most of the time I just Quick Silver to launch programs. I find it much faster (on my G4 iBook 933) than using Spotlight, but it works the same way. And unless Spotlight gives back results by requency of past selections, then Quick Silver wins hands down. Basically to start FireFox, I just type CTRL-Space and then F and Enter. That's because FireFox is the program I most launch when I begin typing F. Also, if you don't want to use Quick Silver to find anything other than Applications, then you can just have it index the Applications folder. Again, speedup and increased accuracy to launch programs.
