Home | Site Index | About IHSA | About IHSA.org | Feedback   NFHS Coaches Education Program The American Sport Education Program (ASEP) has been approved since 1989 under the requirements of IHSA By-Law 2.070 for non-faculty coaches. The program has included an 8-hour instruction seminar in Coaching Principles and Sport First Aid. Later, ASEP has revised its program by increasing the quantity of medical and safety instruction and extending the instruction seminar to an 11-hour program (7 hours of Coaching Principles and 4 hours of Sport First Aid). The program is called the NFHS Coaches Education Program. Its expanded instruction will improves the preparation of persons completing the course and then coaching in member schools. In conjunction with ASEP's course revision, the IHSA Board of Directors adopted the following policy to accommodate the transition from the original ASEP Program to the NFHS Coaches Education Program: Any person beginning to coach at a member school after January 1, 1994, as an ASEP-trained non-faculty coach must have successfully completed the NFHS Coaches Education Program. This means that such an individual will have to have taken the NFHS Coaches Education Program 11-hour training seminar to be eligible for coaching in a member school. Any person already coaching in a member school as an ASEP-trained non-faculty coach on or before December 31, 1993, may continue coaching at any member school under his/her existing ASEP certification. Any previously approved person who changes coaching positions and begins coaching at a new school after December 31, 1993, is encouraged (but not required) to complete the NFHS Coaches Education Program, or at least a 4-hour Sport First Aid seminar to upgrade their training. The Bronze Level course has replaced the previous versions. Coaching Principles has been revised to include updated information and new chapters on coaching for character, coaching diverse athletes, using the games approach to coaching, teaching tactical skills, training for muscular and energy fitness and drugs and sport. The Sport First Aid course presents sport first aid information in a more logical format, provide injury protocols for over 130 injuries and present new information on topics such as blood-borne pathogens and heat illness.
