(1818-1879)

Adolf Anderssen was the king of the romantic era. He was an attacking player with an ingenious feeling for combinations. In order to start a king attack he would run a lot of risks. As bold as his style was, ironically his life was very quiet. He was born in Breslau (now Wroclaw), practically always resided in Breslau and died in Breslau. After winning the great tournament 1851 in London he reflected on becoming a professional chess player, but decided to continue his profession. He became a mathematics professor.  He always was an bachelor who provided for his mother and sister.

Anderssen belongs – together with WM Max Euwe – to the fairest and best-liked top players. Because of his profession he sometimes had to retire from chess, but when he had time he played with everybody who wished it. For instance - Paul Morphy:  Anderssen and Morphy played a match in Paris. These two loyal and amiable players finished their match within one week. Anderssens sportive commentary: "Morphy doesn’t play the best, but makes the very best moves.  I’m not worried having lost this match, because this man plays like someone from another world."
