2003/4 BCF Schools Championship. 143 teams took part in this long-running competition which dates back to 1958 and used to be sponsored by The Times and (before that) The Sunday Times. The finals were held on 26 June at the Nottingham Moat House. The 2004 winners were Monmouth School who beat Haberdashers Askes 4½-1½ in the final. In the 3rd/4th play-off Bluecoast Oldham beat Southend HS, also by 4½-1½. The Best Game Prize (judged by Graham Lee) went to Jac Thomas of Monmouth School. Contrary to what it says in a press release published on the WCU website, Monmouth is not the first school from outside England to have won it: that honour belongs to Dundee High who won it in 1969. Since then Ayr Academy has twice taken the trophy to Scotland, and Methodist College, Belfast, have taken it to Ireland. So in fact Wales is the last home nation to get their hands on the trophy! East Anglia CU Congress (Newmarket, 12-13 June 2004). The annual EACU Congress also doubles as the event to determine the EACU's nominee to the Smith & Williamson British Championship. This year's Open event attracted 25 entrants, and the overall winner was IM Colin Crouch (Pinner) with 4½/5. Joint second, and the highest placed EACU player on tie-break, was David Spence (Ipswich) with 3½/5. David fully deserves his British Championship place as he was the only player to take half a point from Colin Crouch, in a game he should have won (with 30 g5 - see game). Three other EACU players also scored 3½/5 - Steve Gregory (Ipswich), Graham Smith (Milton Keynes) and Norman Hutchinson (Royston) - all of whom have been rewarded with "wild card" entries into the 2004 British Championship. We wish them all well in their Championship ambitions. Grading prizes in the Open section were won by Patrick Ribbands (Cambridge City), Richard Donaghay (Ely) and Steven Pride (Cambridge City). The Under-130 Tournament attracted only 12 entries, but all the games were very hard-fought. The eventual winner was Colin Payne (Norwich Dons) with 4/5, his first ever tournament win, closely followed by Greg Tebble (also Norwich Dons) with 3½/5. The grading prize was won jointly by Roger Smith (Diss) and Michael Coughtrey (Clacton), while the junior prize was won by Daniel Chan (Thamesdown). The whole congress was a joy to control, a dodgy clock during round 4 providing the only opportunity to display knowledge of the laws of chess. The moral to controllers is, though, check every single clock before every single round! Open: 1 Colin Crouch (Pinner) 4½/5, 2-5 David Spence (Ipswich), Steve Gregory (Ipswich), Norman Hutchinson (Royston), Graham Smith (Milton Keynes) 4. U130: 1 C Payne 4, 2 G Tebble 3½, 3-4 M Coughtrey, R Smith 3. Thanks to Richard Freeman for sending the report.

The tenth and final rapidplay on this year's North-east rapidplay circuit was held in St Matthews Hall, Hartlepool over the last weekend in June. It only attracted a modest entry but many of the top players on the leaderboard were present and the sections were fiercely contested. There were only nine entries for the Open which did cause a few pairing problems for the organisers but not for Charlie Storey (Newcastle). He easily won this section with an impressive 10/11, fully 2½ points clear of Clive Waters (Tynemouth) on 7½/11. Open: 1 Charlie Storey (Newcastle, 179) 10/11 (£100), 2 Clive Waters (Tynemouth, 179) 7½ (£50), 3 Paul Hutchinson (White Rose, 190) 7 (£25).
