Microsoft founder Bill Gates arrived in Bangladesh on Monday for a brief visit during which he aims to help expand the impoverished country's information technology industry.
Accompanied by his wife Melinda, the Microsoft chairman was received at Dhaka airport by Science and Technology Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan.
Gates participated in the signing of an agreement between Microsoft Bangladesh and the ministry of education for training more than 10,000 teachers and 200,000 students over the next three years.
Microsoft Bangladesh is a joint venture of Microsoft and Bangladesh's Square Informatix, and it has been operating since June.
Gates also met Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
"His visit is very important for the national interests of Bangladesh, as it will give a new impetus to Bangladesh's nascent IT industry," said Akhtar Hussain, an IT expert.
Earlier, Gates and his wife inspected several microfinance and health projects run by leading nongovernmental organization Brac.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation donated $1 million to Brac to run projects last year.
Gates also visited a health project of the Dhaka-based International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research.
