8th Mind Sports Olympiad Playing Schedule MSO Events

We are pleased to announce the detailed playing schedule for the 8th Mind Sports Olympiad, which will take place in the Manchester Conference Centre at UMIST, between Thursday 19th August and Monday 30th August 2004. A new, schools section of the event will be held on July 10th-11th at the same venue, where the Gigafinal of the British Land UK Chess Challenge will be taking place. Spectators are welcome and there will be no charge made.

All prizes and entry fees are in pounds sterling (£) per player. Note that the first entry fee given is for adults and the concessionary entry fee (in brackets) is for junior entrants (under 19 on August 20th), and for entrants over 65, unemployed entrants and entrants with disabilities. There is a supplementary fee of £3 for booking participation in MSO competitions using a credit or debit card. All new entries now attract a £5 late entry Penalty Fee surcharge.

For those who wish to take part in several tournaments we will have a special entry fee of £100 (£50 for juniors, entrants over 65, unemployed entrants and entrants with registered disabilities) for which you may enter as many events as you wish, excluding any Bridge, invitational or pre-qualification tournaments, provided the schedules do not conflict.

Almost all of the tournaments at the Mind Sports Olympiad are run on the Swiss system. This means that you do not get knocked out of a tournament if you lose a game - you continue to play against opponents who have approximately the same score as yourself and you continue to play every round no matter what your score may be.

The total guaranteed prize fund currently stands at more than £17,000 (i.e. more than $30,000 or €25,000). We hope and expect to attract additional sponsorship so that the value of the prizes can be increased. From time to time we will update the prize information on this site, so please visit us again if you want to know the latest information on prizes.

An online entry form is now available. Alternatively, printed entry forms may be obtained by sending a large self-addressed envelope to:

  • WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
  • EXTENDED! Monday 30, 9:30am-2pm
  • Entry fee: £14 (£7)
  • Pentamind: 4.5 hours
  • Prize fund of £100 for this event

PENTAMIND
(Prize fund TBA)

  • WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
  • [A] To compete for the Pentamind medals, participants must enter tournaments for 5 or more different games or mental skills;
  • [B] At least two of these tournaments must each have playing times scheduled to last for 10.5 hours or longer.
  • [C] All five qualifying tournaments together must have total playing times scheduled to last for 35 hours or longer.
  • [D] You will score Pentamind points according to where you finish in each tournament according to the formula: 100(p - n)/(p - 1) where p represents the number of players in the tournament and n represents the participant's position in the tournament.
  • [E] Not more than two games will be counted from the six Hobby Games Festival competitions: Acquire, Age of Steam, Carcassonne, Lost Cities, Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan.
  • [F] The participants with the highest total Pentamind scores from their 5 best tournaments for different games or mental skills will win the medals and the overall highest score wins the Pentamind championship.
  • [G] You may enter as many tournaments as you wish (excluding any invitational or pre-qualification tournaments) for a maximum entry fee of £100 (£50 for juniors, entrants over 60, unemployed entrants and entrants with disabilities). If you wish to enter for many tournaments this is by far the cheapest way to do it and it qualifies you for extra medal opportunities.
  • [H] You may not include any beginners, novice, age-restricted or graded chess tournaments in your "5 best" results. The Rubber Bridge charity tournament for Marie Curie Cancer Care on Sunday 5th September may not be included.
  • [I] A Pentamind participant who enters a tournament and then withdraws from it before playing at least half of the games will have that tournament included in his score calculations.
  • [J] No player may enter for tournaments which clash in the playing schedule without the permission of the Chief Arbiter, Event Manager or Chief Organiser.

TRIGAMES

  • A player's Trigames score is the total of his rankings in all three tournaments.
