Analysts: 5G iPod Matching nano Sales

by , 9:10 AM EST, December 9th, 2005

A Bear Stearns report shows that the video capable iPod is selling as well as the iPod nano, and in some places is even selling better, according to Reuters. The iPod's popularity has left Apple's music players in tight supply, which is driving up demand for competing MP3 players, according to analyst Andrew Neff.

The Bear Stearns report surveyed 36 randomly selected stores in 20 states to see if sales were meeting expectations, and to monitor inventory and pricing trends from December 5 through December 7.

For the second week of the holiday shopping season, the iPod remained one of the hottest technology categories, along with laptop computers. Mr. Neff sees the strong interest in iPods as healthy for Apple's stock.

Apple stock is currently trading in the pre-market at US$74.10, up 0.02 (0.03%) from Thursday's closing at $74.08.

The white iPod still fairs poorly against the black iPod. Analysts are concerned that Apple may have purchased too much white in the current quarter and may need to either write down the expense of the extra white they bought, or use it in highly anticipated black products. Apple stock was soft today on speculation that white may even have a shorter shelflife than previously anticipated.
