Game One: October 8th Solid
Challenger Vladimir Kramnik steered his first game in this event to the desired result, a safe and solid split of the point with the black pieces. As so often in a title bout, the players seemed content to probe the other's opening repertoire, and their decisions raise more questions than they answered.
Will Kramnik stick to this surprising and stodgy Berlin Defence to the Spanish/Ruy Lopez? What happened to his ultra-solid Petroff Defence? And why did Kasparov refrain from trying his patented match weapon, the Scotch Opening?
Stay tuned to the next weeks of the BrainGames Network World Championship, when these early mysteries will probably be solved.
White Gary Kasparov (2849) 1/2-1/2
Black Vladimir Kramnik (2770)
