Tunatic: Identify Songs By Sound
by , 11:40 AM EST, December 22nd, 2005
Wildbits announced the immediate availability of Tunatic on Thursday. The application can identify a song on the radio, or from another sound source, based on how it sounds. It requires a microphone and Internet connection to "hear" the music, then compare it to an online database. Tunatic is free, and available for download at the Wildbits Web site.

....but it still has a ways to go. I downloaded and played with it. Out of the first 4 songs I threw at it, it correctly identified Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc." and ABBA's "Dancing Queen" but it couldn't figure out Kate Bush's latest single "King of the Mountain" nor B.B. King's "Bad Case of Love." I wonder how it'll do when I play a bunch of classic Motown at it. All those similar 60s drum riffs and doo-wops should confuse it to no end.
Cool idea and slick look, though. Looking forward to it improving.
Their Tunalyzer plug-in for iTunes is cool and lets us all help build their music fingerprint database. That should help also.
