Piper Jaffray's Macworld Expo Predictions

by , 1:30 PM EST, January 5th, 2006

Piper Jaffray analysts, Gene Munster and Michael Olson, have a positive outlook for Apple, and expect some exciting new products at Macworld Expo 2006. Both analysts expect Apple will remain healthy thanks to updates to the Mac platform, a focus on home and portable media, and strong iPod market share.

Apple's keynote address at Macworld Expo, presented by Steve Jobs, is expected to have several surprises including:
Updated iPod shuffle
The new iPod shuffle will replace the 1GB model that has been unavailable since before Christmas. The new model may take on a different form factor, and even have a small display.
Intel-based Mac mini and iBook
There is a chance that Apple will roll out consumer Macs with Intel processors next week, several months ahead of schedule. They also feel that Apple will finish the transition to Intel processors for all of the Mac product line by the end of 2006, or early 2007.
iTunes Video Content
Look for new TV shows to be announced, and maybe even feature films.
Consumer Electronic Devices
Continuing the trend towards an entertainment/media/technology company, Apple may also release new consumer electronic devices. The form and function of those devices is up in the air.

Since Apple is not releasing any information prior to the keynote address, it remains to be seen what it actually will announce. The keynote will be at 9am Pacific time on January 10, 2006. Apple is not offering a live QuickTime broadcast, but a recording will be available later. TMO will provide coverage throughout the keynote, and all week at the Expo.

Piper Jaffray is maintaining its Outperform rating for Apple. Apple stock is currently trading at US$74.13 down 0.84 (1.12%).

Subject: POWERbook, you mean...

iBook is still solid - almost on a par w/ the current PBs: THEY are the ones needing the update, and everyone on Apple's board knows it. Going Intel early for the PBs is plainly sensible.

New 'Pod? Piffle! Time for a break: and plenty else needs doing.
