[4:21 PM] Media Cleaner Pro Receives Major Upgrade
Terran Interactive has announced a major upgrade to Media Cleaner Pro bringing the compression tool to version 4.0. The new version includes several new features and will be shown at Terran Interactive's booth (Streaming Media East, Booth #171) at MacWorld Expo in July. [3:58 PM] Apple Stock Watch: Apple Continues Rise, Closes Above 46
Apple continues to benefit from a statement issued by Richard Gardner of Salomon Smith Barney concerning the P1. Mr. Gardner said that the P1 was likely still on track for an introduction at MacWorld this July. Apple closed higher again today.
Apple closed at 46 5/16, a gain of 15/16 or 2.07%. Volume continues to be moderate with 3,064,900 shares trading hands.
Apple's PC competitors mostly higher with IBM, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Compaq all closing up. Gateway closed down.
The Dow and the Nasdaq both showed good results with the Dow closing at 10970.80, up 155.45 and the Nasdaq closed at 2685.65, a gain of 43.54.

Our story on Solaris Overtaking the MacOS in the overall platform results in the SETI@home project really woke a lot of Mac users up! If you need more information on the SETI@home project, check out our About page. Team Mac Observer grew by over 30% yesterday and we now have 138 team members! In addition, we have joined the tanks of the Top 100 Club Teams, debuting at number 88 with 1,090 work units processed!
A special welcome to Dan Shockley at UPenn who joined us with 92 work units processed! Welcome aboard Dan!
One unfortunate aspect of growing to over 100 members is that we no longer can list all the Team Members on the Roster page. SETI@home only gives us the Top 100 members in our Team, and so that's all we have to list. If we can find a way to list everyone again, we will.
Also, our Team average continues to improve as we now average 21 hours and 95 minutes. Well above the Mac platform average of over 27 hours, and in a different league from the Windows platform average of over 47 hours.

A few weeks ago I wrote a column on how to use your ClarisWorks or AppleWorks to make slide shows. I really enjoyed that whole process and learned stuff myself that I didn't know before I started the column. Following the publication I got a nice letter from David Huston telling me about another, free, program that was available for making slide shows. David raved about the program and said it had a lot more features than the basic features available on the other program(s). He also said it was quite easy to use. I promised to check it out for myself and write about it in the future. Well, this is the future and this is the promised review. However, this is a good news - bad news review.

MacHack 14 has come and gone, but news continues to be made. Continuing their long tradition, MacHack has announced the Top Ten Issues that face Macintosh developers over the coming year. These are great issues and we have details in the Full Story.

J.A. Korsmeyer, Inc. has released POP3 Gateway Extensible Messaging Platform v3.0. This is a cross-platform, java-based e-mail management system that retrieves a company's e-mail from their ISP and delivers it to users on the company's internal network. Developing cross-platform applications is much simpler now thanks to Java and it's successful implementation on all major operating systems. Kudos to developers like J.A. It seems that Wall Street is keen on the P1 based on today's stock movements. Salomon Smith Barney analyst, Richard Gardner, issued a statement saying he felt the P1 was on track for introduction at MacWorld Expo in July and Apple's stock rose over 2 points in response. The Mac Observer Spin: Normally, higher volumes in shares traded can mean a decrease in investor confidence. Today's high volume was more likely caused from day-traders taking advantage of the fervor related to Mr. Gardner's statements as well as some investors increasing their position in Apple in anticipation of MacWorld.

[1:44 PM] Solaris Platform Soon To Knock The Mac Out Of 2nd Place In SETI@home, Help Now!
Team Mac Observer, our SETI@home team (read more about the SETI@home project if you are unfamiliar with it) has topped 90 members with 91 people now able to say they are part of Team Mac Observer! That puts us just about to the 100 mark, an impressive number indeed.
The annoying thing is that the good people using Solaris, the Sun branded Unix OS, are about to overtake the Mac in number of Work units turned in. [3:42 PM] Apple Stock Watch: Apple Climbs For First Time In A Week
Bucking the trend of the last 5 trading sessions, Apple closed up today amidst good news of iMac sales in May and other positive news in the storage sector. In addition, Apple's shares continued to trade in lower volumes, hinting at renewed confidence in our favorite computer maker.
Apple closed at 42 9/16, a gain of 3/8 or 0.89%. Volume was moderate with 2,389,600 shares trading hands.
Apple's PC Brethren were mixed with IBM and Gateway closing in negative territory while Dell and Hewlett-Packard both posted modest gains. Compaq, who shared 3 of the Top 5 spots with Apple in PC Data's Top 5 desktop computers in May with Apple, closed flat.
Both the Dow and the Nasdaq shared in Apple's good fortune as both closed sharply up. The Dow closed at 10655.15, up 102.59 and the Nasdaq closed at 2602.45, a gain of 49.80.
The good people at MAC-O-RAMA, the Mac-only online game retailer, have announced a sale. Better yet, they used the phrase "more games than you can shake a stick at" in their press release. As many longtime Observers will know, that is a descriptive phrase near-and-dear to our Editor's heart, so that earns MAC-O-RAMA extra points! His arguments are powerful, logical, and insightful. But as excellent as his arguments are (and if you are one of the few Mac users on the Internet who did NOT read his piece, do so), Wes has ignored the one thing that completely throws all rational, logical, and traditional rules out the Window. That factor is, of course, Steve Jobs.

[8:08 AM] Ambrosia Releases Quick Bug Fix Update For Snapz Pro
Ambrosia Software, Inc. has updated Snapz Pro to version 2.0.1 to fix some bugs in the 2.0 version released last week. According to Ambrosia Software:
The following is a list of bugs that were fixed in the 2.0.1 update:
Fixed a bug that could cause Snapz Pro 2 to not work with programs that link to InputSprocket, but aren't actively using it (this notably affected Virtual PC, but it may also have affected some games).
Fixed a bug that caused erroneous data to be sent to the sound compressor, which could result in distorted sound tracks or compression errors.
Fixed a few typos.
If the Graphics compressor is chosen, the color depth is now forced to 8 bit color, even if the requested color depth is lower than 8 bit.

Black Cat Systems has released version 2.3.0 of The Atomic Mac, their interactive Periodic Table of the Elements. According to Black Cat Systems:
In addition to the usual information found in such programs, The Atomic Mac also contains a wealth of nuclear information on each isotope, including half life, decay mode, and daughter products.
This version adds information for several metastable isotopes, as well as an improved user interface.

In a sad turn of events on a story we posted last month, an adult iMac parody site was forced to move, probably due to legal pressure from Apple. The following article has language that is mildly adult in nature. While we say nothing that may be innapropriate for children, we recommend you not read our article unless you have a sense of humor that could include adult concepts.
The Mac Observer Spin: We say this is sad because the situation is very unfortunate. Apple has to protect its copyrights as well as their image. While this site seemed to only delight people, and would probably serve to sell a few iMacs for Apple, our current societal and legal system leaves them no choice but to pursue this site. This is too bad, because this site is truly brilliant comedy.
[4:18 PM] Overclocked G3 Shows Best Results Yet In SETI@home Project
On Wednesday, we ran a story about how fast the Blue & White G3 is in the SETI@home project (see our story titled "Blue & White G3 Among Fastest SETI@home Computers"). Our own Team Mac Observer member Indigenous is returning in times in the 11 hour range with his Blue & White that has been upgraded to a 450 MHz with a PowerLogix G3 upgrade.
We received a couple of letters from one Mac users who told us that their overclocked beige G3s were turning in even more impressive times.

Chris need per work unit only 9 hr 28 min 03.7 sec. He works with a beige Desktop Power Mac G3 with an overclocked (500 MHz) 466 MHz-CPU from Phase 5 (www.phase5.de). You find him at the (still very small) group "Team Macwelt".
Wow! Those are some impressive times, that are right up there with even some of the fastest Unix times! Remember, the average Windows time is 48 hr 44 min 32.9 sec as of this writing. We also recieved word from some MacOS X Server users who also reported 9 hour times and we are looking to confirm them. If any Observers are running MacOS X Server and the are participating in the SETI@home project, tell us about your experiences.
In the meanwhile, Team Mac Observer keeps growing. We are now up to 73 members with 542 work units processed! A new web site has been launched by MacInEurope.com. The new site is called MacPicks. According to MacPicks:

On June 9th , Don Crabb wrote a modest article in which he claimed that his sources at Apple mysteriously revealed to him that "Apple was rebuilt in order to be sold". Of course, only the top echelon at Apple could possess such dour information and it’s doubtful that they leak state-secrets to the Mac punditocracy. Don Crabb shouldn’t need leaks to see the handwriting on the wall. All you need is a calculator, an Internet account and a bit of business savvy.

Last week I wrote about how much Windows users will put up with. The main point of that column was dealing with the fact that much of the time Windows breaks and that people take this breakage so matter-of-factly. Today I want to touch upon another aspect that also seems to be somewhat stereotypical of much of the Windows world. I have noticed this with Windows programmers, and by extension their software, and I have seen it in the end users as well. This "thing" I have noticed is their complacence when something is "good enough."

[4:47 PM] BoxTop Software Releases Major Performance Upgrade To PhotoGIF
BoxTop Software has announced the release of PhotoGIF 3.5, a major performance upgrade to the Photoshop plug-in that optimizes GIF images. There are several new features in this upgrade and we are letting BoxTop tell you about them. Read more about the update in the Full Story.

MacTell has announced a partnership with Indigita Corporation to work together on future FireWire devices. The partnership allows both companies to share FireWire developments in the pursuit of increased performance and broader product lines. We have more on this development in the Full Story.
The Mac Observer Spin: FireWire product developments has been much slower to get off the ground than Mac USB development was. This development will hopefully lead to more FireWire products coming to market from both MacTell and other companies as well.

[3:40 PM] Team Mac Observer Jumps To 66 With 477 Work Units Processed
Our own SETI@home team, Team Mac Observer has jumped almost 20 members in the last day to reach 66! In addition, we have collectively processed 477 Work Units, a jump over 80 Work Units in the last day as well. This effort puts us closer to being one of the Top 100 teams. We have also had some more very fast machines join the Team, once again showing the power of the Mac. We will have more details on this tomorrow.

[9:01 AM] Another Sign: 3Dfx To Bring "Generic" Mac Drivers For Voodoo Cards
Inside Mac Games seems to have been the first to catch this stunning development that will have a far reaching impact in the world of Mac gaming and the rest of the Mac community as well. In a Usenet posting, a 3Dfx employee announced the company would be making generic Mac drivers available for off the shelf Voodoo 2 and Voodoo 3 cards. Those Mac users who work with large files across a network will rally appreciate this announcement. Farallon Communications has announced they are shipping a PCI Gigabit networking card for Macs. Most Ethernet networks are 10 Mb, while a few are 100 Mb. Gigabit Ethernet is the next step in the development of this networking technology and Macs are at the forefront. Team Mac Observer has now processed over 300 work units! The Team has also signed up its 39th member making Team Mac Observer larger than several longer running SETI@home teams.
Our Team is also continuing to show off the processing power of the Mac. Team Mac Observer is averaging 21 hr. 30 min 41 sec per unit processed, far faster than the average Windows time per work unit (well over 40 hours per work unit counting all the various Windows falvors. Windows NT 5.0, still in Beta, is the fastest Windows platform at 28 hr 38 min 19.7 sec per work unit.. In fact, Team Mac Observer is also showing up faster than the average Mac processing time of 27 hr 59 min 46.4 sec per work unit! Congrats to everyone in Team Mac Observer!

Spiderweb Software has released an update to its popular turnbased adventure game. Nethergate.
In addition to our newest game, Lost Souls, we've just put the v1.0.3 upgrade of our recent hit, Nethergate, on our web site. The latest upgrade fixes a number of small glitches and takes care of an rare graphics incompatability with System 8.6.

"Pirates" A Great Movie, If You Know The Storyline
Last night Dave Hamilton and I sat down to watch "The Pirates if Silicon Valley." We thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but we both felt that it was so sketchy in some aspects of the story that it would be difficult to follow had we not already known the story. Black Cat Systems has released a new shareware app called Y2K Mac to help you countdown the time until the year 2000. You can use the program to help remind you to call and check on your PC friends (at least those for whom "PC friends" is not an oxymoron") because Y2K Mac includes milestones along the way. According to Black Cat Systems:
Black Cat Systems has released Y2K Mac, a calendar which counts down to the year 2000, displaying the months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds until the new millennium. Along the way, it identifies critical dates for Y2K compliance, such as the day many older GPS navigation units may fail.

Deal-Mac has pointed out that Apple seems to have run out of iMacs! A notice found at the Apple Store says:
"Due to popular demand, new orders for iMacs will not ship until late July"
That is a stunning turn of events to be sure. This would be the 2nd time in the last 9 months or so that Apple has seriously misjudged the demand on their products.

"The iMac Still Has No Competition"
Last week, Gateway and Packard Bell NEC Inc. independently announced new all-in one computers. Even the mainstream press perceived this move as a reaction to the iMac's success. The media got it wrong, however, when they compared these new all-in-one designs to the iMac. Gateway's 'PC in a monitor' is a bland beige and economy class in appearance with none of the iMac's flash. While the NEC Z1 incorporates slick design elements, it's too cold and arid, like something out of the movie 'Gattaca'.

Purple Shark Software has released a new screen saver called Setting Sun. According to Purple Shark Software:

[4:20 PM] Cruise Control Adds Voice Control With New Plug-in
Walnut Systems have released a new plug-in for Cruise Control that allows the automation software to be controlled by voice. We have details and other detailed information in the Full Story.
The Mac Observer Spin: That's very cool sounding! Cruise Control is an excellent piece of software and the Mac Observer will be releasing a review of the program shortly. The ability to add even limited voice recognition to the software will be an excellent boon.
[3:58 PM] Apple Stock Watch: Apple Rides The SeeSaw Back Up With Small Gain
Apple's stock started another round of the seesaw it has been riding for the last few trading sessions by closing up today. Apple closed at 47 1/8, a gain of 3/4 or 1.62%. [2:40 PM] New Application Acts As Universal Browser History
Serac Software has announced a new product called iRemember that acts as a universal browser history to help you find where you have been. iRemember also works with Netscape's browser products that do not have a built-in history. Taylor Design has updated their text cleaning utility TextSpresso to version 1.2. According to Taylor Design:
TextSpresso 1.2 adds full printing with user options such as header and footer data, text font, and margins. TextSpresso 1.2 also adds a convenient Tool Bar palette with buttons for frequently used commands. And version 1.2 fixes a corrupted resource which caused problems on 680x0 Macs running Mac OS 7.1.

[1:46 PM] Side By Side Pics: Packard Bell Design Resembles An Ugly 20th Anniversary Mac
Yesterday we reported that Packard Bell had released a computer that showed they could Design Different. It turns out that they can't design too different after all. We put out an Observer Call to help us find an image and lots os Observers obliged. The common thread of those Observers who had seen the image was that the new Z1 from Packard Bell was an ugly rip-off of the 20th Anniversary Mac Apple released in 1997. We certainly agree. We have side by side images of the two computers in the Full Story.
The Mac Observer Spin: The Z1 would look cool if we didn't have the real thing to compare it too. The 20th Anniversary Mac is sleek an elegant compared to the much boxier Z1. Still, it is an improvement over the usual beige boredom.

For some time I have had a close association with a great on-site technical support company called Computer NERDZ! This is an outfit in Texas that will go to your home or office and train you, fix your computer, go computer shopping with you, set up your network, or do just about anything else you could possibly need done that is computer related. This company works on Macs as well as PCs, not to mention several other platforms, so I have had a unique opportunity to see customers from many of them. What has stunned and amazed me time and again are the things that Windows users will put up with.

[4:39 PM] Packard Bell The First Of The Catch Up Squad To Design Different
At last, a PC company has decided to Design Different, at least according to a Reuters report. The new computer is not an iMac rip-off, but it is a specific departure from the typical PC fare which is usually a dull beige box. [4:16 PM] Apple Stock Watch: Apple Falls Again As Tech Stocks Closed Mixed
Apple closed lower again today in a disappointing follow-up to yesterday's gain. Apple closed at 46 3/8, down 1 9/16 or 3.26%, almost enough to wipe out yesterday's gains of 1 7/8. Volume was moderate with 2,003,600 shares trading hands.
Hewlett-Packard and IBM also closed down today while Compaq, Dell, and Gateway 2000 closed up. Compaq closed up despite the company warning of a 2nd Quarter loss.
Both the Dow and Nasdaq closed in positive territory as well. The Dow closed at 10841.63, up 56.68 with the Nasdaq reporting in at 2544.15, a gain of 26.32.

The SETI@home project is put together by researchers at UC Berkley to tap into unused processor power around the world to process data from the world's largest radio telescope. When you sign up, your computer will process data chunks sent out by the researchers, a process that can easily take upwards of 20 hours for an average Mac. This processing only takes place when your computer is not being used by you, so it does not interfere with your work or play.

Our very own SETI@home team, Team Mac Observer has, now passed 10 members in just the first day! We currently have 11 members with 22 work units processed!
The SETI@home project is put together by researchers at UC Berkley to tap into unused processor power around the world to process data from the world's largest radio telescope. When you sign up, your computer will process data chunks sent out by the researchers, a process that can easily take upwards of 20 hours for an average Mac. This processing only takes place when your computer is not being used by you, so it does not interfere with your work or play.
The Mac Observer has started our own team and we need you to join! We have all the instructions (it's easy) on our SETI@home page. Come on and join our team!

My First Mac Was A Typewriter
"A Man and His Machine - The Dilemma of a First Time User"
My friend "Sam" seems to be typical of some of those first time users and I asked him to tell me some of the confusing things he has encountered since he got his very first computer. "Sam" is over 70 and retired. He got his iMac as a Christmas gift from loving family members. Those family members live very far away so are not available to help him with daily problems and/or questions. The machine was set up and a brief demonstration was given to "Sam" before he had to pack it up again and return to Texas. Once back home he was easily able to set up the machine because iMacs are just so easy to set up. However, he had problems with the Internet hookup and he really did not know where to start using his machine.

Randy: I wanted interactive games on the web, but alas there were none. Only lame porno sites and a place called Shareware.com, where I filled up my first three hard drives.
Gary: Yes, I remember just how un-interactive the web was… And I also remember thinking back then, "Boy the web sucks for games". Randy: True, back in 1992 and 93 when we were just getting our feet wet on the web, every magazine you read, (yeah, paper based magazines, I know it's sounds crazy now…) talked about the promise the web held for online gaming. MacSourcery has posted a minor update to CineMac, their screen saver development app for the Mac. The new version fixes a compatibility problem with Director 7.02.

The Mac Observer Spin: Interesting, to say the least. However, we find it unlikely that Apple would be involved with any OS other than MacOS X Server/Client. [2:39 PM] Home Networking App Allows Parents To Control Time Of Day/Amount Of Time On Net
Vicomsoft has released the latest version of their popular networking tool, SurfDoubler, under the moniker of SurfDoubler Plus. SurfDoubler Plus allows multiple computers to share a single connection to the Internet, though only two computers can actually use the connection simultaneously. This new version includes firewall capabilities, Network settings, and can even allow parents to control access time of day and amount of time that their kids can spend accessing the Internet. The Mac Observer Spin: SurfDoubler Plus can certainly make it easier for small home networks to access the Internet, but the ability for parents to control time of access for their kids could be invaluable.

"Intuit, Best Buy, and Hewlett-Packard, Who Needs 'Em?"
There is a lot of good news in the Mac world right now, a whole lot of it. Apple's stock has been steadily rising for the last seven weeks; Wall Street analysts are tripping over themselves to see who can say the most good things about Apple; iMacs are still selling like hot cakes; new software and hardware products are coming out faster than The Mac Observer or any other publication can keep up with; and the future just keeps on looking better all the time.
Amidst all this happiness there have been a couple of stumbling blocks in the last few weeks however. Intuit dumped QuickBooks for the Mac, Hewlett-Packard stopped Mac scanner production, and Best Buy proved once again that we were better off without them in the first place. Former Mac Cloner Marathon Computer has developed two products for rack mounting Blue & White G3 towers from Apple. Marathon Computer had a brief stint as a Mac cloner offering rack mounted systems for musicians, lighting professionals, and network administrators who were looking for durable rack mountable systems. The Mac Observer Spin: The Mac is very dominant in the lighting and music industry. Being able to rack mount a system like the Blue & White is a huge benefit to this sector of the Mac using world.
Fujifilm has announced they are shipping Zip 250 disks for Iomega's Zip 250 drives. This adds a bit of pricing competition as Fujifilm has normally been priced slightly lower than Iomega branded disks.

Dan Knight at Low End Mac is reporting that school officials and accountants are switching California State University to an NT-Only school over the next three years. [12:36 PM] Marketing Survey Finds Mac Formats Preferred by Newspapers/Magazine
A marketing survey by Roher Public Relations found that most magazines and newspapers preferred to receive digital media files on Mac formatted media as opposed to Windows. [3:25 PM] Maxis Finally Announces Mac Version Of SimCity 3000!
In a long anticipated announcement, Maxis finally announced that SimCity 3000 would be coming to the platform that the Sim titles started on, the Mac. SimCity is a simulation strategy game where one controls the development of a city down to the finest detail in an attempt to grow it into a huge thriving metropolis. SimCity 3000 is the most recent version of the game, though until now it has not officially been planned for the Mac. [3:25 PM] Apple Stock Watch: Y2K PC Worries Bring Apple's 6 Day Streak To A Halt

[2:45 PM] Analysts Lower Q4 Projections For PC Companies Because Of Y2K, But Not Apple
In a move that many in the Mac world might find amusing, Wall Street analyst firm Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette lowered the 4th quarter projections of several leading PC manufacturers due to concerns that Y2K troubles would lower IT expenditures. Noticeably absent from the list was Apple whose projections were not changed. Read more on this in the Full Story.

[2:05 PM] QuickTime 4 Goes Final As Apple Brings On Big Name Content Providers
Apple snuck in the final release of QuickTime 4 today. Many Mac users may have noticed their QuickTime installer automatically updating them with the new components. At the same time Apple has announced a few more big names that are providing QuickTime content which have been attracted to the 5 million copies of QuickTime that have been downloaded since the first initial beta version. "Is Apple Wall Streets' New Darling?"
AAPL performed like a champ for investors the first week of June. While much of the market sagged under its own overvalued weight, AAPL drifted higher on a daily basis. Some of the new momentum must be due to the 18 million shares in short interest that dangle in dire need of cover. The rest of the rise can be attributed to the combined strength of the recent upgrades, such as Moody's notable boost of Apple's debt rating. But it was Salomon Smith Barney's buy signal with a 12-month target of $55 that gave news editors the ammunition to create sound bite size explanations of AAPL's recent good fortune. As if it were that simple.

"ACTION GoMac 2.02, One Of The Best Mac GUI Utilities Ever"
Although many things about the Windows environment are pretty scary, one feature that is fairly handy is the task bar. Having the ability to both launch applications and switch among them, from the same place, is a good concept. However, the Windows implementation of this suffers from one flaw…open folders consume space in the task bar, eventually making all items too small to keep track of. Enter a Mac implementation of the Task Bar concept, called GoMac, which surpasses the Windows version.

"I Have Made My Peace With Apple"
I have made my peace with Apple. What was I tense about in the first place? A number of things that date back some time now.
Cloning was the biggest issue. I was a big fan of Power Computing. They had style. They had an attitude that more closely resembled a company like Nike or the recently energized Gatorade product line than a computer company. Apple killed them and this made me mad.

IDG has announced that the Consumer Showcase which debuted at MacWorld Expo San Francisco last January will also run at the upcoming MacWorld Expo in New York this July. In addition, the Macintosh Games Exhibition will also return to MacWorld Expo (first time in New York as well). These are both important aspects of the Expo as they represent a successful Mac presence in these markets.
The Mac Observer Spin:Important indeed as only a successful consumer and gaming presence at MacWorld Expo San Francisco combined with continued vendor interest in doing it again could result in its return. That reflects the success of Apple and the iMac in these markets which is very important for the continued health of Apple.

Bungie Software and Steve Jackson Games have announced that Myth will be making its way to tabletop gaming through GURPS. GURPS is a system of tabletop role-playing rules that are designed to be flexible and portable. GURPS has editions covering Cyberpunk, westerns, vampire worlds, traditional fantasy and a lot more. Butcher has announced that the Myth World Cup '99 competition has begun. The Myth World Cup '99 is the largest team tournament of the year with over US$5,000 in prizes at stake. 96 teams (up from the 64 teams originally planned due to the high turnout) have assembled, including some of the best players to ever play the game.
Currently, the Qualifying Round is being played to determine which teams will make it to the First Round. According to Butcher, the tournament organizer:
The Myth World Cup '99 starts today, with the ninety-six teams divided into sixteen pools for the Qualifying Round. All teams' contact people and alternate contacts will be e-mailed information about their matchups for this week; every team has one match which must be scheduled and played by Sunday 6 June, 9pm CDT.

Now to be honest, many of the reviewers comments are dead-on and quite right. The comment in question? The very title itself: "Mac OS X Server: No Easier Than NT, So Why Bother?" In a surprise announcement, Mac Publishing LLC has announced that they are buying MacCentral Online. Mac Publishing LLC is the joint venture owned by Ziff-Davis and International Data Group (IDG). Mac Publishing was formed during the darkest days of Apple's death spiral when MacUser was folded into Macworld Magazine and MacWeek became Immedia Weekly. I choose this time to write about it because of all the summer events that you might want to save, savor, or share. How about a special slide show to present at a shower or at the reception that shows the bride or groom (or both) from childhood to the day of their wedding. How about an end of summer barbecue with all your vacation shots from Tahiti? O.K., maybe for you it is Chicago not Tahiti, but you get the idea. [4:21 PM] Problem With Dissapearing GoMac Task Bar Fixed In New Update
The good people of Power On Software have announced that a problem encountered by many, if not all, users of version 2.x of ACTION GoMac has been fixed. The problem experienced was that the task bar simply didn't show up starting on Saturday night. Here at The Mac Observer we tried reinstalling, throwing away preferences, and all the other usual tricks to no avail. Many Observers wrote in to tell us the same thing. Today, Power On sent out a letter to registered users advising that the problem has been fixed in an updater the company worked on to finish this weekend. The Mac Observer Spin: The problem was a frustrating one, but Power On deserves praise for working hard to get the fix in place as well as for notifying users. ACTION GoMac is a great utility.
[3:31 PM] Apple Stock Watch: Apple Rises Again As Yet Another Analyst Raises Rating
As every other PC manufacturer fell today, Apple's stock rose to close at 44 13/16, up 3/4 or 1.70%. Part of Apple's rise can be attributed to a rise in Apple's rating from a "neutral" rating to a "buy" by Salomon Smith Barney today (read our separate report on this development). [2:55 PM] Sonnet Lowers Prices On Two G3 Upgrade Cards
Sonnet Technologies has announced they are lowering prices on two of their G3 upgrade card products. This news follows an announcement from Apple on the release of a 450 MHz Blue & White G3 and other changes in the Blue & White G3 line. Digi International has announced a product called AccelePort USB 2, and AccelePort USB 8 for the Mac. The product is designed to allow Mac users to connect their serial peripherals to an iMac or Blue & White G3. Read more about this new device in the Full Story.

[1:32 PM] Salomon Smith Barney Raises Apple's Rating To "Buy," New Target US$55 Per Share
Reuters is reporting that Salomon Smith Barney analyst Richard Gardner has announced that the firm has raised Apple's rating to a "Buy" from Neutral on the strength of the iMac and other recent success from Apple. Apple's recent deal with Sears for the national retailer to sell the iMac also figured in the new rating. In addition, Mr. Gardner set a new target for the stock of US$55. [10:43 AM] Apple Finally Breaks 400 MHz Barrier, Shipping 450 MHz Blue & Whites
In a surprise announcement, considering it did not come during a media event of some kind, Apple has announced they are shipping faster Blue & White PowerMacs. The high end of the line is now 450 MHz with the bottom now starting at 350 MHz. We have details oin the new line in the Full Story.
The Mac Observer Spin: This is a pleasant surprise. It is great to see Apple finally break the 400 MHz barrier, though it took too long.
Here's the interesting part however. With Apple announcing a faster Blue & White in between trade shows and keynote speeches, what does that mean Steve JObs will be announcing at MacWorld Expo New York in July? The P1 comes to mind.

When Apple introduced QuickTime recently, it created some excitement about the new features and capabilities of this standard and powerful multimedia software. However, there is a major flaw: the user interface.
The UniTrap is an ergonomic snap-on shell for iMac and Power Macintosh G3 (Yosemite type) owners who need a bigger and more comfortable mouse than the default Apple USB mouse nicknamed the iPuck. It comes in five flavors which match the iMac flavors.
IDG has announced that the Consumer Showcase which debuted at MacWorld Expo San Francisco last January will also run at the upcoming MacWorld Expo in New York this July. In addition, the Macintosh Games Exhibition will also return to MacWorld Expo (first time in New York as well).
