Word is that Indiana coach Mike Davis won't be back with the Hoosiers if he doesn't get them to the NCAA tournament this season. If Davis is fired, look for Iowa's Steve Alford to be Indiana's top choice as a replacement. Bob Huggins, ousted by Cincinnati before this season, said he hopes to get back into college basketball, not the pros. "I have had opportunities to coach in the NBA," he said. "At this point in my life, I want to coach on the college level." He said he was open to taking a coaching job outside of Ohio. Early projections for the NCAA tournament have started to roll out. Defending champion North Carolina and Kentucky are generally regarded as being in the field of 65, but both are dangerously close to the bubble. Kansas and Louisville are likely on the outside looking in. Imagine an NCAA tournament without those four teams. The University of Mississippi has forwarded to the SEC a report on allegations that New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister came into contact with football prospects at a high school playoff game. After landing the top-ranked prospects in Texas (Matthew Stafford) and Maryland (Akeem Hebron), Georgia is one of two finalists for the No. 1 recruit in California. Los Angeles Dorsey tailback Stafon Johnson, ranked as the No. 13 senior at any position by Scout.com, is scheduled to choose today between the Bulldogs and Southern Cal. A commitment from Johnson could push Georgia's class, ranked third nationally by Scout.com, closer to top-ranked Florida. LSU received its 25th commitment with the addition of Class 5A All-State MVP Jared Mitchell of Westgate in New Iberia. Mitchell selected the Tigers instead of South Carolina. He also considered UCLA and Louisiana Tech. Defensive end Victor Thomas of Olive Branch, Miss., and receiver/cornerback Stephaun Raines of Dalton, Ga., are the Tennessee football team's latest two commitments. The Vols will find out about offensive lineman Ramone Johnson of Chicago this weekend. He's scheduled to announce between Illinois and Tennessee on Sunday. Gani Lawal, one of the nation's most highly recruited juniors, ended his process early with Thursday's announcement that he'd be playing basketball for Georgia Tech beginning in the 2007-08 season. He chose Tech over Kentucky and Wake Forest, and will make that commitment binding during November's early signing period. Redskins cornerbacks coach DeWayne Walker was believed to have been at UCLA yesterday finalizing a deal to become the Bruins' defensive coordinator. | |||||||
