Scouts help plants in Sodus Bay On August 2, scouts and volunteers participated in an annual event on the Sodus Bay Marsh Unit south of Bay Bridge. The event is to control Water Chestnut plants from invading the open waters of Sodus Bay. The plant, not to be confused with Chinese Water Chestnuts served in Chinese dishes, is an exotic plant native to eastern Europe that was accidentally introduced into New York State during the late 1800s. Having no natural defenses, the plant will dominate other beneficial plants and eventually take over. The Water Chestnut was responsible for closing down sections of the Hudson River to commercial shipping during the early 1900s.
