"Glamour was the disguise" was the nonsensical but highly memorable tagline for Bugsy, the biopic of gangster Bugsy Siegel that set in motion one of the most memorable Hollywood romances in recent memory. Warren Beatty, notorious ladies' man and perpetual bachelor, had just ended a relationship with Madonna, whom he had tried to turn into a screen siren in his underperforming Dick Tracy (sadly, the Material Girl underperformed as well). Annette Bening was the hottest new actress in years, playing delicious bad girls who left audiences and critics panting; her white-hot turn in The Grifters had just nabbed her an Oscar nomination. Looking for an actress to play Virginia Hill, the Hollywood mistress of the legendary Siegel, producer-star Beatty and director Barry Levinson thought Bening a perfect choice for the leggy, tart-tongued starlet, a woman who could hold her own against one of America's most ruthless criminals. They were right -- and then some. Though no one actually saw the fireworks explode, Beatty and Bening smoldered their way across the screen (most notoriously in a dinner sequence featuring Hill's attempt at making paella) and into Hollywood legend. Bugsy itself was warmly received, capturing numerous critics' awards, and with ten Oscar nominations was considered 1991's front runner for Best Picture; alas, it lost the prize to a dark horse named The Silence of the Lambs.
